Here at the hive, we have desperately missed Shawn Mendes. So, as you can imagine, we were just buzzing to hear his latest singles, ‘Why Why Why’ and ‘Isn’t That Enough.’ We have so much to say about these tracks, along with Shawn’s commentary from his Zane Lowe interview.
If you haven’t already, listen to the new singles here.
‘Why Why Why’
Where do we even begin? We’d never expect less than perfection from Shawn, but we’ll still never stop being in awe of his talent. If you ask us, ‘Why Why Why’ is a perfect return for Shawn. In this track, he opens about his previous struggles with “I stepped off the stage with nothin’ left / All the lights were f*ckin’ with my head.” Presumably referring to the cancellation of the Wonder tour due to his mental health. The repetition of “Why, Why, Why” and “Feels like everything goes ’round and ’round / and ’round, and ’round, and ’round it goes” makes listeners feel an anxious feeling through his music.
The track perfectly sums up how Shawn felt before his hiatus and puts his feelings into perspective for fans. The raw honesty and vulnerability has struck fans, us included, directly in the heart. Opening this next chapter feels like a brand new start for Shawn, with a newfound understanding between himself and his fans.
‘Isn’t That Enough’
If you don’t already have tissues out from listening to ‘Why Why Why,’ then this is the time to grab them. Shawn’s vocals still give us the same goosebumps now as they did in 2015. The song is short and sweet but marks such a special place in Shawn’s career.
I think when I started writing this album, it was really just like, can I do this again? And it was like I felt zero pressure to address anything, to write about anything in particular. It was just, can I make music and can I feel good about making it again? And then ‘Isn’t That Enough’ was kind of this moment of… It was kind of like I was up against this wall every day. We were in the studio, and then all those walls kind of broke and everything stripped back, and it was just like me with a guitar singing in a room.

Shawn Mendes On Shawn And More!
Have we ever mentioned how much we love a good Zane Lowe interview? ‘Cause we do! We’ll be sharing some quotes with you, but if you’d like to do watch the full interview, you can do so here.
We’ve already made it clear how much we love the new tracks, but ‘Isn’t That Enough’ keeps finding new ways to become extra special!
Completely out of my mom’s vernacular, but I remember when I played her the song and the video, the first thing she said was, “Oh wow, babe, you found yourself.” And it’s like, my mom would never say words like that. It’s not something she would say; gave me chills when she said it. When your mom says that, it hits a little different.

It was a no brainer to release ‘Isn’t That Enough,’ but why did he choose to release it with ‘Why Why Why?’ He shared that with us too!
There was something anthemic about those words, “why, why, why.” It almost felt like a cry. It felt like… I don’t know. It just felt powerful and beautiful, and that’s why I wanted that to go with ‘Isn’t That Enough.’ I wanted people to feel the spectrum of the song and space.

Shawn never disappoints with his artistic choices, which really just makes us all the more excited for Shawn. The new album will release on October 18th, and we can’t wait! If you needed another reason to be excited for the album, Shawn shared why he’s “speaking his truth” on Shawn.
I realized there was two options for me. It was literally like, I’m going to go down this path of speaking my exact truth, or I’m going to dance around it. And it felt pointless to dance around it, even if the song was never to see the light of day. I was like, why are we here dancing around it? So yeah, it felt like I crossed a big threshold, and I think it feels just really liberating, even just to be in a space where I’ve done that as a writer. Now I feel more free to do that as a human.

We can’t wait to see how Shawn’s truth is reflected through his music after these past couple years. Most of all, we’re grateful that he feels ready to come back to this space and share music with us again! In addition to the album’s release, Shawn will be playing a series of shows. Unfortunately, most shows are sold out, but you can join the waitlist here.
How are you feeling about these new songs? Will you be attending any of his upcoming shows? Be sure to tweet us @TheHoneyPop or find us buzzing on Facebook and Instagram to let us know!
