We don’t know about you, but for us at The Honey POP, our fave holidays get even more fun when we find ways to get pop culture involved! From your costumes to your decor, Halloween is hands-down one of the most exciting holidays to throw your own spin on, and one of the easiest ways to do that is by decorating pumpkins. If you wanna have a totally fetch Halloween, here are some ideas for you to decorate your pumpkins inspired by the Mean Girls movie!
Burn Book-O-Lantern
Come on, you knew this was coming. The Burn Book is one of the most well-known images from Mean Girls because of its aesthetic and how important it is to the plot. Regina, Karen, and Gretchen write their grievances about students and teachers at their school throughout the book and invite Cady to do the same when she joins The Plastics. Later on when Regina and Cady butt heads, Regina uses it against her and makes it look like the other Plastics were bullying her, in addition to exposing the other rude things they wrote in the book.
A Burn Book pumpkin would be a cute addition to your porch on Halloween night! You can paint your pumpkin bright pink, doodle on it with black marker, and leave a lipstick print to match the iconic cover. You could draw the letters on if you’re feeling creative or even cut some out from a newspaper or magazine. There’s also a lot of room for innovation on this one, since you can write anything out. Some ideas:
- Happy Halloween!
- Trick Or Treat
- Boo, You Wh*re
- You’re Really Pretty
- That’s So Fetch
“I’m a mouse, duh!”
It’s Halloween, so of course we have to get some inspo from THE Halloween scenes of the movie! Karen’s cute costume was a lacy dress with a mouse ear headband, which totally confused Gretchen when they met up for a Halloween party. For this pumpkin idea, you’ll actually need three: one large pumpkin and two tiny ones to add as little mouse ears. Paint the main pumpkin black and tie a gray or silver bow around it to replicate Karen’s Halloween dress. Then paint the tiny ones gray and glue them on top of the big pumpkin to create mouse ears!
The Plastics
Made up of Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Smith, The Plastics are pretty much the rulers of North Shore High. By the end of the movie, Cady infiltrates the group and flips it inside out, giving everyone hope for a less clique-y school year next fall. Luckily for us, they have some pretty memorable fashion that would make for instantly recognizable pumpkin designs!
For a Regina pumpkin, you’ll definitely need either an “R” pendant or some rhinestones to replicate her signature silver necklace. Some of her most iconic looks in the movie are black and pink, including the pink button-down with black stripes that she wears in the first cafeteria scene and the black top with a pink belt and purse that she wears while throwing copied pages of the Burn Book around the school hallways. Black and pink is the perfect combo to represent her, and you can have fun adding patterns to the pink sections!
Gretchen wears a red and tan argyle sweater when she first meets Cady and it really stands out among the other Plastics’ outfits, so we think that’d be a great look to draw inspiration from for a pumpkin! You can paint the sweater’s diamond pattern, then add lines that cross in the middle of each diamond. She also wears a tan plaid skirt on the movie poster, so it’s a preppy vibe that fans will definitely recognize.
When the principal calls Karen, Gretchen, and Cady into his office after Regina blames them for writing the Burn Book, Karen wears a pastel striped t-shirt that we think would be really fun to paint on a pumpkin. Just grab some cute colors and follow the pumpkin’s natural lines! If you’re feeling extra, get some light purple ribbon to recreate the crossed detailing on her sleeve.
The direction for your Cady pumpkin depends which side of her you want to go with – you could draw from the blue plaid shirt she wears in the first scenes of the movie, or embody her Plastics makeover by taking inspiration from the magenta top and jeans she wears on the movie poster. Once you have all four made, assemble the pumpkins together on your porch, making sure they’re far from any other pumpkins because they’re simply too cool to be near them. Bonus points if you leave a package of toaster strudel in front of Gretchen’s as a reference to her dad inventing it!
Jingle Bell Rock
If you’re just waiting for November 1st so it’s appropriate to go full Christmas Mode, this idea is for you! One of the best-known scenes from Mean Girls is when Regina, Cady, Karen, and Gretchen perform ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ in front of their classmates. It’s delightfully chaotic as Gretchen accidentally kicks their CD player into a fellow student’s face and cuts off their music, then Cady leads the school in a sing-along to finish the performance.
For this concept, we’d paint our pumpkins red and add some glitter, then top it off with a Santa hat or glue on a white feather boa or fuzzy trim. If you’re feeling extra, you could add a shiny black bow to reference their bow belts. And of course, break out an old-school video camera as a nod to Regina’s mom filming from the audience!
