Book Overview: Dead Below Deck
Content Warnings: death, parent death, murder, violence, corpse, bullying, drugging, divorce, mention of cancer and alcoholism (Read at your discretion!)
Summary: It was supposed to be the best-ever girls’ trip: five days, four friends, one luxury yacht, no parents. But on the final night, as the yacht cruised the deep and dark waters between Florida and Grand Cayman, eighteen-year-old heiress Giselle vanished. She’s nowhere to be found the next morning even after a frantic search, until security footage surfaces . . . showing Maggie pushing her overboard.
But Maggie has no memory of what happened. All she knows is that she woke up with a throbbing headache, thousands of dollars in cash in her safe, a passport that isn’t hers, and Giselle’s diary. And while Maggie had her own reasons to want Giselle dead, so did everyone else on board: jealous Viv, calculating Emi, even some members of the staff.
What really went down on the top deck that night? Maggie will have to work her way backward to uncover the secrets that everyone—even Giselle—kept below deck or she’s dead in the water.
A Mystery In Reverse Chronology
As far as we know, Dead Below Deck by Jan Gangsei is one of the first mysteries we’ve read with a reverse chronological format! We jump into the story when Maggie gets arrested as the main suspect in Giselle’s disappearance/death. From there, we work back in time from their last night on the yacht to exploring Key West to gambling in the Bahamas. With each time shift, we read an entry from Giselle’s journal, gathering clues as to what could’ve happened. And we loved every bit of solving this mystery thriller!
Everyone Has A Motive
Whenever we read mysteries, we like to assume everyone’s guilty. No one is safe or exempt from suspicion, especially in Dead Below Deck. It surprised us to see just how much everyone had a grudge against Giselle, even Giselle’s father and the staff members. (Like, hello??) We even started to believe that Giselle’s best friends, Emi and Vivian, plotted with other people and somehow played a part in her death. Some of the details that we caught were so uncanny!
The Twist Ending
Finally, the last plot twist in Dead Below Deck will have your mind blown! We were piecing together Maggie’s reason for switching schools and getting closer to Giselle. And for the record, our conclusion was correct. The spring break trip turned out to be so much bigger than we expected, but not for the same reasons as the characters think. And the open ending also had us shook because the aftermath of this mystery was unlike any we’ve read before. We don’t want to spoil too much, though!
A spring break trip turns deadly in Jan Gangsei’s Dead Below Deck, with an heiress’ death, uncovered secrets, and a girl trying to prove her innocence.
