ATEEZ’s Wooyoung is one of the best dancers in K-Pop, in this essay we will…
Ok, so maybe we don’t have time for an essay, but we’re still going to prove it to you. Whether it’s supporting the other ATEEZ members or during his time in the center, Wooyoung always shines on stage. Here are eight times he proved us right!
‘Crazy Form’
You knew we’d start with this one, didn’t you? Something shifted in the universe the day we first saw Wooyoung hit us with the “Body, body, watda gatda, step like this,” during ATEEZ’s 2023 MAMA performance. One butt shake and the world was never the same again.
‘Deja Vu’
Yeah, the ‘Deja Vu’ era belongs to Yeosang, but this performance belongs to Wooyoung. The modern take on traditional hanboks is incredible styling and a great link to how ATEEZ references their Korean identity and culture throughout their discography.
‘The Real’
Could you ever talk about ATEEZ’s choreography without mentioning ‘The Real?’ Sounds fake to us! The dance break in ‘The Real’ gives us plenty of opportunities to see the ATEEZ members, including Wooyoung, freestyle their best moves and often spoil future choreography. And we’re not forgetting that incident when Wooyoung took the chance to call out the ‘Say My Name’ controversy.
‘Say My Name’
And speaking of ‘Say My Name,’ this is one of the best ATEEZ choreographies, period. All of ATEEZ shines in this, but we especially love Wooyoung in the bridge and final chorus. Plus, his “가자! (Let’s go!)” before the chorus hits in this dance practice makes us smile every time.
‘Bouncy’
“Slow it down, make it bouncy, jigeumbuteo fly,” was arguably the K-Pop cultural reset of 2023. Wooyoung absolutely slays the end of the bridge when everything cuts out just before the final chorus. This part of the performance has gone viral more times than we can count, and we’ll watch the clips every single time.
‘Inception’
“I’m in love,” is us talking about ‘Inception.’ Like ‘Deja Vu’ and Yeosang, a lot of ATINY associate ‘Inception’ with Seonghwa, but we think Wooyoung shines too. Despite the more flashy and overtly eye-catching moments, the way Wooyoung commands the audience’s attention in the more understated post-chorus is a great example of his stage presence!
‘Pirate King’
Now, we’re going all the way back to the very beginning of ATEEZ’s journey. Wooyoung literally started his career with “Will you be my friend?” and we’ve been ATINY ever since. That moment is the perfect crystallization of Wooyoung’s on-stage charisma and persona, and we love that ATEEZ know exactly how to highlight that.
P.S. The THP team was lucky enough to see the below performance IRL, and you can read our thoughts on it here.
‘Ice On My Teeth’
From their very first single to their newest! ‘Ice On My Teeth’ incorporates hip-hop and ballet for a super unique, and very ATEEZ, concept. This lends itself so well to Wooyoung’s on-stage persona, with that mix of hard and soft, and aggressive yet reserved. We’re still yet to watch a performance of ‘Ice On My Teeth’ without rewinding that second chorus about 20 times.
