ZEROBASEONE have constantly slayed every single one of their releases. From their debut to now, ZEROBASEONE keep delivering some of the best music in 5th gen, and BLUE PARADISE falls right in that category. ZEROBASEONE’s new comeback is an extension of their amazing sound, as they try new genres and concepts and still deliver songs that feel so unique to them. BLUE PARADISE creates a heaven of pop perfection with every single one of its tracks, and here’s how.
‘Doctor! Doctor!’
Before the release of the full thing, ZEROBASEONE gave us a taste of BLUE PARADISE with the pre-release single ‘Doctor! Doctor!’ Everything about this pre-release is perfection, from the concept of unrequited love as a disease to the R&B ballad sound. The intro alone is enough to lure you, and a spiritual entity was definitely in the room when they recorded that pre-chorus. ‘Doctor! Doctor!’ is catchy yet chill and smooth, and still, it showcases heartbreaking feelings, full of love and devotion, a duality that makes the song even more interesting. It has to go right at the top as one of ZEROBASEONE‘s best songs ever.
‘BLUE’
As good as ‘Doctor! Doctor!’ is the main star of the show, the song that encapsulates everything we love about BLUE PARADISE is ‘BLUE.’ This alternative pop-dance track is filled with nostalgia and emotions but remains refreshing and youthful. ‘BLUE’ feels bittersweet in the best way possible. The chorus feels like a boost of emotions, and of course, their vocals simply make the song hit in all the right places – Taerae’s high note in the bridge is one of the many highlights of the album. ‘BLUE’ is like the light at the end of a dark tunnel. It’s hopeful and full of life, representing ZEROBASEONE in their best light.
The B-Sides
Having two incredible singles in one mini-album would never mean ZEROBASEONE wouldn’t put their all in their b-sides – BLUE PARADISE doesn’t have a single skip. ‘Devil Game’ takes a whole other vibe from the other 0T9 songs with its retro and groovy sound. The bass goes hard as the production directly takes inspiration from video game music. It’s a truly fun and cheeky song that ZEROBASEON pulls off perfectly.
What makes BLUE PARADISE stand out as a mini-album in ZEROBASEONE‘s already incredible discography is that, for the first time, they’re introducing sub-units. ‘Out Of Love’ is a sub-unit consisting of Jiwoong, Zhang Hao, and Gyuvin. From that title, you wouldn’t guess ‘Out Of Love’ is an upbeat song heavily inspired by pop-rock. The mixture of the sentiment behind their vocals and the impeccable production make this song one of our favorites. Ricky, Gunwook, and Yujin came together for ‘Step Back’ – a rhythmic, fun, yet somewhat dark song. It fits perfectly as a counterpart of ‘Devil Game.’ Finally, Hanbin, Matthew, and Taerae sing together in ‘Cruel.’ It’s a song imitating the bad boy vibes, but it’s also such a fun listen with twists and turns you wouldn’t expect, along with incredible vocals.
ZEROBASEONE continues to evolve and release fresh new music to expand the universe that is their music. With a mini-album like BLUE PARADISE, they push the bar further by having new units and bringing something new and risky to their discography. BLUE PARADISE is nothing less than another massive win for us as listeners and for ZEROBASEONE as idols.
