If you’re on BookTok 24/7 like we are, then you already know what time it is. Accomplice to the Villain, the third installment in Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s Assistant to the Villain series, is officially here! And yes, consider this your sign to reread the first two books and get a refresher.
Accomplice to the Villain picks up only two weeks after the end of book two. Evie, Trystan, and the rest of the gang have almost everything they need to fulfill their kingdom’s prophecy and save its magic. Now they must search for a magic wand in hopes of returning their beloved, froggy Kingsley back to human form.
We absolutely could not put down Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s newest addition to her romantasy series. And it’s not over yet! Here are three of our favorite things about Accomplice to the Villain!

Book Overview: Accomplice To The Villain
Content warnings: blood, death, battle, serious injury, graphic violence, torture, familial estrangement, graphic language, sexual situations, child abuse, animal imprisonment (Read at your discretion!)
Summary: Evie Sage didn’t mean to become the right-hand woman to the kingdom’s most terrifying villain. One minute, she was applying for an entry-level position that promised “light paperwork and occasional beheadings,” and the next, she was knee-deep in magical mayhem, murder plots, and an entirely inappropriate crush on her brooding, sharp-jawed, walking disaster of a boss.
Now, with a magical prophecy unraveling, assassins showing up in the break room, and a suspicious amount of frogs wearing crowns, Evie has to figure out how to survive her job without setting the kingdom on fire—or her dignity, which is hanging by a very sarcastic thread.
Being evil-adjacent was never part of the five-year plan. But then again…neither was falling for The Villain.
The Slow Burn Continues
Now, we won’t spoil too much about Evie and Trystan’s slow-burn romance in Accomplice to the Villain. But we will say to buckle up because nothing can prepare you for the amount of pushing and pulling between these two. The moment we try to predict something will happen, that thought evaporates on the next page. It was a grueling fight for us, but the progression was well worth it. Evie and Trystan grow ever closer in their admiration (and attraction) for each other, and we’re seated for them to continue proving their love.
Lovely Supporting Cast
When we read about a large cast such as the one in Accomplice to the Villain, we can’t help but fall in love with all the supporting characters. Not to mention the various love lines at play in this book. (We’re shipping all the couples at this point.) Every character plays a role in some way. And we loved reading all the different perspectives, from Gideon and Becky to Clare and Kingsley. We did miss the mention of a certain younger brother in this installment, but that only makes us more excited for his role in the next!
A Few Cruel Twists
Not us gripping our hair when all the truth bombs started coming out near the end of Accomplice to the Villain. Like when Evie and Trystan discover the truth about their childhoods and their rightful places in the prophecy. It was shocking enough that the traitor turned out to be who it was, but there was a hint in the epilogue that it could’ve actually been someone else all along. Bear with us, we’re trying to be as vague as possible. All bets are off at this point for the next (and possibly final) book, so we’ll have to wait and see for ourselves.
The villainy and slow burn continue in Accomplice to the Villain. With a magical prophecy, a lovable cast, and a few cruel twists to make it all better, we’re seated for the third book in Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s romantic fantasy series!
Accomplice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer releases on August 5th, and you can order a copy of it here!
