Who knew murder mysteries could be lighthearted and, dare we say, funny? Gloria Chao accomplishes this feat and more with her new release, The Mortal Enemy Murder Club. It’s the second book in A Hu Done It Mystery series, following The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club.
We see all of our favorite characters back together in The Mortal Enemy Murder Club. This time, Kathryn Hu gets approached by the infamous revenge podcaster Mandy Thorne. Mandy’s convinced someone is out to get her, and she needs the murder club’s help before it’s too late.
The murder mystery goes even deeper than we could’ve expected. Here are three reasons why you should read The Mortal Enemy Murder Club by Gloria Chao!

Book Overview: The Mortal Enemy Murder Club
Content warnings: murder, attempted murder, death, death of family, bodies, violence, some blood, poisoning, stalking, vomiting, cheating, guns, weapons
Summary: Kathryn Hu is not getting into the business of solving murders. Yes, she and her friends Olivia and Elle figured out who killed their cheating ex-boyfriend. But now Kat can get back to her usual, murder-free existence.
Then she gets an unexpected plea for help. Mandy Thorne has ruined countless lives through her revenge podcast. She also did her best to frame the girls. Now, she claims, someone is trying to kill her. And the girls are the only ones who can save her.
But can the trio and Mandy put aside their mutual contempt long enough to prevent a murder and solve this case? Can they become…the Mortal Enemy Murder Club?
Sleuths & Shenanigans
Our favorite amateur sleuths are back! Kathryn, Olivia, and Elle must somehow solve a murder where all evidence points back to Mandy, who is adamant about being framed. Given that they were in her shoes in book one, they can’t help but want to find the real killer. The trio brings their own set of skills, even more refined this time. With her knowledge of chemistry and forensics, Kat can see unique solutions to the puzzle. Liv has all the legal knowledge and has since improved her sleight of hand skills. And though Elle has a more limited role in this book, her connections can get her information that isn’t easy to come by.
So. Much. Tea.
We were not prepared for the amount of times we were gagged in The Mortal Enemy Murder Club. The basis of Mandy’s podcast is to share the juiciest revenge stories. And we’re suckers for gossip! Though the stories were recorded anonymously, Kat and her team must match them with people who have actual motives to go after Mandy. The podcast had the audience and power to ruin people’s lives, especially when their true identities were revealed. But the closer we got to finding the real killer, the more piping hot tea was spilled. We didn’t see the twists coming, but we had a ball reading it!
Kathryn & Adrian’s Relationship
Finally, we love when a murder mystery has a touch of romance in it like The Mortal Enemy Murder Club. Kat and Adrian’s romance started in The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club when she was trying to prove her innocence. Seeing her relationship with Detective Adrian Birch develop in book two made us giddy and giggly. He pays such close attention to Kat, no matter how far apart they are. He’s a man of few words and many grunts, most of which she has learned to interpret. But best of all, Adrian puts Kat’s safety, comfort, and protection above all else, especially when she dives headfirst into investigating.
Gloria Chao’s The Mortal Enemy Murder Club brings back our favorite amateur sleuths in an exciting, twisty murder mystery. With piping hot tea and a sweet touch of romance, we absolutely can’t get enough!
The Mortal Enemy Murder Club by Gloria Chao comes out July 28th, and you can order a copy of it here!
