You already know what month it is! There is so much going on in February, and we wanted to take a beat and honor Black History Month. Today, we’re featuring a few new book releases by Black authors!

We at THP make it our mission to feature diverse and multicultural books as much as possible. It’s important for every reader to see themselves represented in both fiction and nonfiction books.

Yes, our TBR is never-ending, but there’s definitely enough room for these four books featuring Black characters!

We’re starting strong this Black History Month with the epic finale of Namina Forna’s The Gilded Ones trilogy: The Eternal Ones! Our protagonist, Deka, goes on the hunt to defeat the gods who are killing innocents in the fight for power. She and her friends are in a race against time as Deka’s mortal body starts to fail. Black Girl You Are Atlas By Renée Watson

Black History Month book rec: Black Girl You Are Atlas by Renée Watson

We always welcome a good poetry rec, and Renée Watson’s Black Girl You Are Atlas makes us love them even more! The title alludes to the Greek titan Atlas, condemned to hold up the heavens for eternity. It’s an ode to Black girlhood, more specifically, the times when one can feel the weight of the world on their shoulders. We absolutely loved this semi-autobiographical poetry collection, especially her haikus about sisterhood. Plus, if you listen to the audiobook, you can hear Renée Watson read the poems herself!

Wander In The Dark By Jumata Emill

Our third book recommendation for Black History Month is Wander in the Dark by Jumata Emill. Think of a modern-day The Hardy Boys with Black protagonists. Amir Trudeau becomes the main suspect in the murder of the most popular girl in school. He and his estranged half-brother Marcel must work together to find the killer and clear Amir’s name. But they dig up even more dangerous secrets while trying to solve this mystery. Wander in the Dark hooked us in, and we couldn’t figure out the murderer until the end!

Lastly, we recommend Wade Hudson’s latest middle-grades novel, The Reckoning! This book tells the story of Lamar, an aspiring filmmaker who starts making a documentary about his grandfather and his activism during the Civil Rights Movement. But soon after, Gramps gets killed by a white man in a traffic altercation who claims to have done it in self-defense. Lamar and his family organize protests and bring their community together to bring Gramps’s killer to justice. Meanwhile, Lamar documents this journey of battling racial injustice and becoming an activist through his recording lenses.
