Mia Giovina, the 19-year-old New Jersey singer-songwriter, loves to rewrite songs. Her fans on the Tik Tok community, including us at The Honey Pop, love her for it. Her creativity sparked across the masses, achieving the milestone of 100k followers on Tik Tok alone! What can we say- we can’t get enough of her point of view on our fave pop songs!

However, her platform goes beyond rewriting songs and showcasing her immeasurable talents with her vocals and on instruments. She is also an advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance. She also hopes to create a safe space with her music for anyone who needs it and connect with fellow fans just like us!

In our exclusive interview with Mia Giovina, she tells us all from her Tik Tok following, rewriting songs, music that inspires her, sharing the message of body positivity and self-acceptance, her hair and beauty secrets, and more!

How did you end up in music? Can you tell us a little about your journey so far and how you knew this was the path you wanted to take?
My dad is a really gifted musician, and my mom is an incredible songwriter, so, in a way, I think music is just in my blood. Music has been my priority for my entire life, and I’ve been singing since before I can remember. All I ever did as a kid was sing and perform, even if it was just to my mirror in my room. I started doing musical theatre when I was ten years old and continued with that for years! Freshman year of high school was when I started performing out in coffee shops. Once I got a little taste of the music world, I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life!

And congrats on the 100k on TikTok! You’ve gained quite a following on the platform with reworking songs. What’s that process like, and where do your ideas come from?
Thank you! It’s still really hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that so many amazing people believe in me. My rewrites have definitely become one of my favorite things to do, so it’s really fulfilling to see such positive feedback on them! I usually start with the arrangement of instruments first, just to get a feel of the vibe and genre of the rewrite. Then I move on to lyrics, which can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour! Then I lay down vocals and harmonies! As far as inspiration goes, I really just try to stay true to the song. I do a lot of research beforehand to really get a deep understanding of the artist’s lyrics before I try to add onto their story!

Do you have a favorite song rewrite that you’ve done?
I don’t think I have a favorite rewrite just because they’re all so special to me, but if I had to choose one that I love right now, it would be my ‘Golden’ by Harry Styles rewrite! I’m super proud of the lyrics in that one!

What are your plans for releasing original music? Do you know what direction you want your sound to go in?
I write a new song pretty much every day, so I’m definitely itching to release original music, but I wanna make sure it’s something I’m really proud of! All I know is that I want my music to feel like a safe place for my listeners.

What is one message you hope to spread on your platform?
I just hope that my supporters know they’re important and never alone. I love when they leave comments about how my rewrite perfectly captured a situation they’re going through and how they feel so seen and understood. I love that they can see themselves in my music, and I hope they know that my music and I will always be here for them when they need us.

You’re a big advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance, what advice would you give to fans who may be struggling with those virtues? What are ways that you stay positive and help yourself love who you are?
I’ve spent almost my entire life trying to please people. I wore what I was supposed to, I acted the way I knew people would accept, and I never stepped outside of the box because it was just safer inside. But as I’ve spent time alone, I’ve realized that it’s so important to live for yourself. Do the things that make you happy, even if other people can’t understand them, because not becoming the person you’re meant to be is scarier than those things you’re so afraid of.

What’s your favorite genre of music to listen to or that makes you feel the most inspired? Where else would you say you gain inspiration?
I think art comes from art. I think I gain all of my inspiration from the music I’ve spent my whole life surrounding myself with, and I pretty much listen to a little bit of every genre! However, the artist that’s really inspiring me the most right now would have to be Phoebe Bridgers. Her lyrics are so fresh and new, and I’m really inspired by her authenticity.

If you could choose any song, by another artist or yourself, to fit yourself and your life which would it be?
My favorite kinds of songs are the ones that I wish [I] had written because they feel that personal. Pretty much any Phoebe Bridgers song feels like she just literally reached into my soul and turned my feelings into a song. But, if there was one song that would be the finale to my life as a movie, it would probably be ‘Fine Line‘ by Harry Styles. When those trumpets kick in, and he starts singing “we’ll be alright,” it’s kind of hard to not imagine your life as a movie.

What are some of your favorite trends on TikTok right now? Did you ever try any of the trending foods and recipes? If so, what was your favorite?
I’ve been obsessed with makeup and fashion since the day I found out beauty gurus were a thing on YouTube when I was 9 years old, so I’m definitely on that side of TikTok right now! I get a lot of my beauty and fashion inspiration from the looks I see in other people’s videos. As far as food trends go, I am probably one of the pickiest eaters alive, so I tend to try to stick with what I know.

And we’ve noticed that your hair always looks amazing, what are your secrets? Can you share some tips with fans? What are three beauty or skincare items that you can’t go without?
First of all, this is the nicest question, and I am blushing. I’m in love with beauty and fashion! My favorite pastime as an 11-year-old was dragging my parents to Ulta with me to drool over all of the new hair and makeup products, and not much has changed for me as a 19-year-old. For my hair, I honestly try to wash it as little as possible because washing it too often can really damage your hair. With that being said, on days that I’m not washing it, I love to use Dove dry shampoo! Then for makeup, I’m a sucker for big lashes, so I use L’Oréal Lash Paradise mascara, and these little Ardell lash trios to really make my eyes pop! I also love a natural, glossy lip, so I pair my strawberry Carmex with my NYX lip liner!

What are five songs you’ve had on repeat recently?
I’m the kind of person who will make a 16-hour Spotify playlist and then listen religiously to only that playlist for months until I’m completely sick of every song on it. With that being said, I just started a new playlist that I’ve been listening to nonstop. Some of my favorites are ‘Tell Your Mom’ by Georgia Webster, ‘Talk to Strangers’ by Annika Rose, ‘If We Make It Through December’ by Phoebe Bridgers, ‘Levitating’ by Dua Lipa, and a classic, ‘Sweater Weather’ by The Neighbourhood.
