Besties, we have something very important to discuss. The adorable series that is The Summer I Turned Pretty, of course! The show is based on Jenny Han’s book series of the same name and follows a teenage girl named Belly (a nickname for Isabel) who wants to have the ultimate summer, unlike anything she’s experienced before. But it gets a little complicated when the guy she’s liked forever is giving her the cold shoulder, she feels like a misfit in the town’s debutante scene, and her best friend back home doesn’t understand why she wants to change.
Every minute of this show is an absolute whirlwind mixing drama, comedy, and romance with a little unique sparkle along the way. And if you haven’t binged it yet, we can help persuade you. Here’s a spoiler-free look at some of our favorite things about the series!
The House
The Summer I Turned Pretty mostly takes place at a beachy vacation house that two families stay at every summer – first, there’s our protagonist, Belly, who visits with her mom, Laurel, and her older brother, Steven. Second, there’s Laurel’s best friend, Susannah, who visits with her sons, Conrad and Jeremiah.
Aside from the fun family atmosphere, the house in question is just gorgeous! Between the airy kitchen and the huge pool the kids hang out in all the time, we wouldn’t mind spending a summer or two there.
The Friendships
Even with the flurry of teenage drama, love triangles, and family conflict, what really lies at the heart of The Summer I Turned Pretty is longstanding friendships that get all the characters through the hard times they face. With so much happening in one house, everyone is pretty much bound to slip up at some point, but they hear each other out and don’t let anything come between them!
The Fashion
Consider your summer wardrobe complete because The Summer I Turned Pretty delivers the ultimate inspiration! From crochet tops to fun sundresses and flannels, there’s so much personality in every look on the show. You also get a dose of elegance during the scenes between Belly and her debutante friends, so you get the best of both worlds.
The Soundtrack
First off, let’s all thank Jenny Han and Prime Video for getting us ‘This Love (Taylor’s Version)!’ From Taylor Swift (who has five – yes, five! – songs on the show) to Olivia Rodrigo and Frank Ocean to Jack Harlow, the show’s soundtrack sounds like we left one of our favorite playlists on shuffle.
An honorary musical mention goes to a little Harry Styles joke at a moment when Jeremiah throws on a blazer. May the unofficial 1D uniform days be remembered!
