Think of a song that’s comforted you through a hard time. Maybe the lyrics talked about the frustration involved in such tough emotions and made you feel less alone, or maybe it took a more positive stance that encouraged you to push forward. If you’re an alternative fan, then at least one of the songs that have helped you was probably by YUNGBLUD!
Dom constantly uses his music to uplift others in what they may be going through, and his latest single, ‘Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today,’ is the perfect example of how he finds a balance between letting out his own angst and turning it into something hopeful and inspiring. Over an energetic guitar riff, he talks about how the hate he’s gotten has affected him and how he learned to reclaim his life and turn things around on bad days.
I wrote this song on a morning when I didn’t even want to get out of bed. I sat and looked at the ceiling, head full of so much shit, reading what the internet was saying about me that day, and I just didn’t feel like feeling sad. I wrote these words to help me stand up. To me this song is what happiness feels like. Happiness with a bite. A defiant sort of happiness. Looking at yourself in the mirror and telling the sadness to fuck off and come back another day. I wanted this song to be a little part of someone’s day, no matter what they’re going through they can put this on and feel a bit stronger today. That’s the vision, that’s the dream…

From the important message to the fun music video, we love everything about ‘Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today!’ If you follow Dom on socials, you probably saw him post a mysterious message about meeting up in a certain area of London on June 20th, and it turns out he did that so fans would meet him on the set of the video. We love that he includes the Black Hearts Club in everything he does and always makes an effort to show his appreciation.
When we made the video, it needed to replicate that idea [of defiant happiness]. My manager asked me, ‘What can we do, that no one else does?’ And the concept came to us. All over the world I meet my fans in the streets, to feel a connection. To look into another person’s eyes and see that they’re going through the same things as me. It’s kind of become a ritual of ours. Put it this way, the fucking police all over the world know when we’re town! So I said let’s roll some cameras, pull up a truck, no permits, no permission, tell people to meet me at a location and have a massive water fight. Sing, scream, and feel together. Imperfect, raw, real… happy.
YUNGBLUD
“Happy” is the best word to describe how Dom and his music make us feel! In the spirit of ‘Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today,’ we wanted to share some more YUNGBLUD songs that never fail to lift us up when we’re struggling.
‘Loner’
If you’re feeling like you’re out there on your own, grab your headphones and tune into ‘Loner!’ This early YB classic insists that you “bounce if you’ve had enough,” spinning on the double meaning of “bounce” to tell you to dance along to the song and leave toxic situations you’re sick of.
‘hope for the underrated youth’
Sometimes you just feel like screaming and letting out the bad energy, and that’s what ‘hope for the underrated youth’ is all about. “Every day is an episode” but you can push through it and create the life you’ve always wanted in spite of it.
‘weird!’
Dom livened up our quarantine experience when he released ‘weird!’ during the early days of the pandemic, as an ode to how weird everything felt at the time. Even now, its main sentiment of “don’t wreck your brain, it’ll be alright” never fails to calm us down when we get anxious for the future.
