Hello there, honeybees, and welcome back to yet another edition of Binge-Worthy Buzz. If you’re unfamiliar, our weekly series where we recommend you a list of new things to watch so you don’t have to look up new movies and shows on your own. Ready? Let’s dive in!
Deadpool
Deadpool has arrived on Disney+, people, this is not a drill! The “merc with a mouth” is finally showing up next to fellow Marvel characters on the homepage, and we’ll be honest, we missed him so much up there! Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson is by far one of the best things that has ever happened to comic book movies, and we won’t be taking criticism on that.
What we love most about Deadpool is that, yes, he’s funny and crazy, and seeing him constantly breaking the fourth wall is hilarious, but there’s also so much more to him. When we really pay attention to his story, we see how passionate about helping to stop the bad guys he is and how far he’s willing to go for that as well. Of course, he also has some personal issues to work through, but don’t we all? In short, if you haven’t, definitely go check out Deadpool, just maybe not with anyone under 16 in the room, ok?
Logan
Another X-Man who has also recently joined the Disney+ catalog is Logan. Hugh Jackman’s last appearance as Wolverine is an actual emotional rollercoaster, but we love every second of it. Everyone gave a stellar performance, and we’re so glad we can finally watch the movie on Disney+ from the comfort of our homes.
This movie could not have been a more fitting farewell to Wolverine. We see Logan as a retired hero hiding with Professor X in a world where apparently there are no more new mutants. Or so they think until a young girl named Laura finds them and asks for help to get to a safe place. BRB, we’re making some popcorn and rewatching Logan.
Lightyear
Buzz Lightyear had to make his way back on this list this week, ok? Pixar’s latest movie is about to drop on Digital platforms on August 3 and DVD on September 13. We’re getting our action/sci-fi fix with this one. You can be sure of that.
The origin story of one of the world’s favorite toys received lots of love from Pixar fans, who can’t wait to see more of it. And also, seeing Chris Evans’ performance as Buzz is truly something else. One thing we’re definitely looking forward to as well is some of the bonus content from the movie, such as voice commentary and six deleted scenes from the movie.
Marvel Animated Series
The San Diego Comic-Con just happened, and there is a lot to be said about it. But here, we’ll focus on what happened at the Marvel panel. Basically, we learned we wouldn’t be short on content for a while. Lots of new animated projects have been announced for the next couple of years, and we just want a time machine so we can watch them already!
Among the new stuff they’ve announced are the second season of What If…?, the series of shorts I Am Groot, and the animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year, X-Men ’97, and Marvel Zombies. Most of these have their release dates set for 2023 – like X-Men ’97 and the second season of What If…? -, and 2024 – which is Spider-Man: Freshman Year‘s case. But we can definitely prepare for those by going back to season one of What If…? and the I Am Groot shorts when they drop on August 10 this year.
Sharp Stick
Closing today’s list, we have Sharp Stick. Lena Dunham’s latest movie spins quite the comedy tale mixed with some provocative moments. The story revolves around Sarah Jo, a naive 26-year-old babysitter living in California with her mom and sister. All things considered, life at home isn’t the best, but it could be a lot better for Sarah Jo.
Life seems pretty uneventful until she gets involved in an affair with her boss, Josh. Of course, that wouldn’t be the end of the world if it weren’t for one little detail: Josh is married. Their little fling is what sets the rest of the story in motion, but we won’t say anything else because we think you should see for yourself. The movie opens this Friday in New York and LA, but will expand to nationwide theaters on August 5.
