Julia Wolf’s lyrics and the feelings behind each of her songs always blow us away, but she really called. us. out. with ‘Gothic Babe Tendencies!’ This mind-blowing track has a fairly chill vibe despite its stinging lyrics, which break down Julia’s fears of loving someone, how she didn’t get to have a cutesy high school romance that sets the standards for what she wants out of a relationship, and more. Meanwhile, a metronome-esque beat reminds us of the fast heartbeats that always plague us when we’re with that special someone, as well as the anxious racing heart that pops up when you’re worried about your future with them.
‘Gothic Babe Tendencies’ speaks to how I feel when starting to develop feelings for someone. Finding someone you like is challenging—a rarity nowadays—so when it happens, something in me says it won’t last. It’s a gloomy mindset thinking it’s too good to be true so better to run before getting hurt. There’s a part of me that, of course, wants to believe….that wants to surrender to the sun instead of running from it. I think many of us “gothic babes” have this internal battle.

Part of what we love about ‘Gothic Babe Tendencies,’ and what also ruins us, is how Julia paints herself as a villain of sorts when it comes to finding The One. Of course, she isn’t necessarily the villain, but everyone knows that terrifying feeling where you question if the problem is actually you rather than your circumstances. We’re telling you, Julia knows just how to get us in our feelings!
And if that wasn’t enough, blackbear hops on ‘Gothic Babe Tendencies’ for a verse of his own! While Julia’s talking about a current flame and contemplating whether she’ll just get burned in the end, bear is looking back at an electrifying love that’s still “messin’ with [his] head.” We’ve wanted these two to collab forever, so we’re stoked to hear them on one track! Even if they’re breaking our hearts in the process.
Another thing we love about ‘Gothic Babe Tendencies’ is the lyric “I always choose the dark, but what if I surrendered to the sun?” Julia is a self-proclaimed Swiftie, and this line gives us such ‘Midnight Rain’ vibes! While ‘Midnight Rain’ sees Taylor reflecting on a relationship where she left behind someone made of “sunshine” in favor of focusing on her future and her dreams, Julia has the chance to step into the sunshine and is doubting whether she’s ready to open herself up to romance.
