Vernon Shows Off His Pop-Punk Skills in ‘Black Eye’

Vernon

Anytime we get new music from SEVENTEEN, either as a whole or from individual members, we honestly can’t contain our excitement. So excuse our over-excitement, please and thank you. Anyways, we got another track from Vernon! ‘Black Eye,’ which marks his third track this year, joins ‘Beg For You,’ his collab with Charli XCX, as well as Omega Sapien’s ‘Wrecker,’ both of which we honestly loved so much. And you know what we’ve noticed? Vernon has been able to release the type of music that he’s been really into lately. With Hyper-Pop for his Charli XCX collab and Pop-Punk for ‘Black Eye.’ Which is good for him and us; just throw in K-POP, and you have all of our favorite genres.

‘Black Eye’

‘Black Eye’ truly comes from the deep parts of all of our Pop-Punk dreams. And it simply screams Vernon through and through. Speaking of screams, did we all hear that scream at the beginning? 🤨. We knew we were in for a ride as soon as we heard that, and we were right. Inspired by Avril Lavigne and the overwhelming feelings you go through while navigating the world, ‘Black Eye’ is everything we could’ve hoped for from Vernon. From his raspier vocals, to the beat, and like with every good Pop-Punk song, we can’t forget about the anthem-sounding vibes at the end; it simply is just great. Plus, the MV was filmed in the style of found footage. The whole thing had us reminiscing about old Pop-Punk tracks, so thank you Vernon.

Now, we can’t talk about the track without talking about the lyrics, which was our favorite part. We honestly can’t pick one single line, so we’re just going to tell you all of our faves:

  • “Don’t leave me in the dark / U said u won’t be far”
  • “With ur innocent eyes, u smile so bright / Stop wasting your sunshine on me / Cause i can’t tell if it’s real or a lie”
  • “I’ll just let it burn everything around me / Cause you can’t save me from my sadness / No don’t save me”
  • “But if you come too close / I might just burn you whole / Turn my back and shut the door / Knock knock / Is there anybody out there?

Now, did we have a lot of favorites? Yes, but we did tell you we couldn’t pick. But honestly, these lyrics stood out the most to us because they really encompass what the track is about. Throughout the track, it’s apparent it’s about being alone, and wanting to be alone as you go through the struggles of life, but when someone finally gets close, they get closed out, especially with the outro. Through all the change, you get beat up, ending up with a ‘Black Eye.’ *Sigh,* it’s all very emo, and we love it. Carats (and Vernon), we already know which verse was your favorite, so should we even ask? 👀, jk we love you <3.

All You Need Is Your Friends

All 13 SVT members posted their support for ‘Black Eye’ via Instagram and Weverse, and in return, Vernon set a pic of the notifications as his Weverse header. We love the constant support the members show for each other; look away there’s something in our eye 😭.

As we mentioned earlier, the track really is Vernon, and as of late, he’s been posting a lot about Pop-Punk, from always shouting out Avril, ‘2 MINUS 1,’ to the looks he’s been sporting lately; we knew something was coming. He even hinted at it multiple times, and we still didn’t believe it, heck we still don’t. So till we get more Vernon tracks and the rest of ‘The Thirteen Tapes’ series from the group, we will be jamming to ‘Black Eye,’ and you should too! You can find where to stream it here
