We are back with another interview, and this time it is with Colton Dixon! We are so excited to bring y’all this interview and let you get to know this incredible musician a bit more. Colton, who is a Top 7 finalist from American Idol, is currently wrapping up a US tour and just released his EP, Canvas. He’s so busy, but he made time to sit down and chat with us, and we are honored!
So without further ado, let’s get into this interview…
Hi Colton! Welcome to The Honey POP. For the first question, we’d love it if you could give a brief intro about yourself.
First of all, I am a proud father of twin girls, Athens and Dior. After my wife Annie gave birth to them in 2020, it made me focus even more on my calling as an artist. I want them to know that their dad is serving others, loving others, and putting God first. My new EP, Canvas, is heavily influenced by this perspective.
You have been on tour for the last month or so and will finish up in Fayetteville, AK, on May 14! How has this tour been so far, and what has been your favorite moment?
Tour has been incredible. So thankful that we have had a chance to connect with so many fans this spring on the Build a Boat tour. My favorite moment every night is being able to hear the audience sing the songs back to us.
‘Build A Boat’ is the latest single from your EP. It is such a beautiful song and really hits us deeply. Could you tell us a bit more about the process you took behind writing that song?
This new project has allowed me to work with some new people, and ‘Build a Boat’ is no exception. We were super inspired by the Noah story in the Bible. He chose to have faith regardless of the circumstance, or how it made him look to the others around him.
You partnered with Mercy Ships for the music video for ‘Build A Boat.’ We’d love to know more about how that partnership came about!
I had always heard of Mercy Ships and love what they do, so the partnership was a no-brainer, especially with a song called ‘Build a Boat’ ha. So thankful that we could come alongside of their mission of reaching those without access to standard health care and shed some light on the work that they do.
You made it to the Top 7 of Season 11 of American Idol! How was that experience for you, and what do you think is the most important thing you learned?
I grew up a lot on my time as a contestant on American Idol. Musically, Spiritually, and overall as a human. Hard to say what the most important thing was, but I’d say – “Don’t believe the hype, good or bad.”
When you are sitting down to write a song, what is usually the method you like to write in? Do you like having a concept, or do you just go by the feeling in the room?
It varies, but I love starting with a concept or title or even a word, then letting that concept dictate where the music needs to go.
Your EP, Canvas, was recently released on April 28, and we are obsessed! What can you tell us about the EP?
Canvas is all about hope. Finding beautiful things in the midst of the sometimes chaotic lives that we live.
