Our Favorite Things About the 2023 VMAs

It’s an understatement to say that the 2023 VMAs were a night to remember! There were so many things going on. Every single performance was amazing and every award was memorable! However, there were still some stand-out things about the night we simply cannot stop thinking about… Here are some of them!

Anitta’s Performances

Anitta has been living rent-free in our minds since the 2023 VMAs and she’s not going anywhere. She won for the second year in a row the award for Best Latin Music Video and performed not once but twice — and she owned the stage with every fiber of her body. She first performed her songs ‘Used To Be,’ ‘Grip,’ and the song that earned her the award ‘Funk Rave.’ Her performance was explosive, to say the least. Full of colors, and energy, and she really brought something truly special to the night. And later on, she premiered her incredible collaboration with TOMORROW X TOGETHER: ‘Back For More.’ Anitta was everywhere at the VMAs and we loved that for her (and for us).

Stray Kids Winning Best K-Pop And Performing ‘S-Class’

Stray Kids was one of the most anticipated acts of the night, and they did not disappoint in the slightest. They took home the award for Best K-Pop, making them the second boy group ever to win the award, and broke the stage with ‘S-Class.’ It was hands down one of the most insane performances of the night and they gave us their absolute everything — adding a new dance break, playing with camera angle, and adding even a small tribute to Hip-Hop in the second verse. Stray Kids truly made us proud at the 2023 VMAs and we couldn’t be happier about how far they’ve come.

Taylor Swift… Just Taylor Swift

Taylor may not have performed, but she definitely owned the night. She took home almost every single award she was nominated for, including Music Video of the Year and Best Direction both for ‘Anti-Hero.’ And on top of that, she made our whole entire night. She was always in front row, supporting every single artist and having the time of her life. Her energy was so contagious. While we were watching the main show, there was also an audience camera on her and that alone was a show.

Shakira’s Video Vanguard Award

The Video Vanguard Award is one of the most prestigious awards an artist could get at the VMAs. It celebrates their art and impact through the decades. This year, it was for Shakira. And we couldn’t think of a better artist than her. We’ve grown up with her videos, and her music. On top of that, to see a Latina artist win this award for the first time is huge. On top of that, her collaboration with Karol G won Best Collaboration for ‘TQG.’ Yes, it was a big night for Latina women!

And on top of winning this insane award, she performed a 10-minute-long medley of some of her best hits. And she stole the show. We were hooked for every single second. Shakira remains one of the best performers ever and to see her celebrate her insane career was heartwarming and simply insane. She is a performer, she performs. No one does it quite like her.

The Hip-Hop Medley

Another thing that made these VMAs extra special was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. It made the night really special. The final performance of the night included a massive tribute to the genre that has shaped so many of our favorite artists and has given us some of the most amazing masterpieces. Nicki Minaj did an amazing job as an MC the entire night, she gave her all in her own performance, and she also slayed this one. It also included Lil Wayne, LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, and Grand Master Flash. It was an incredible way to wrap up this amazing night and make sure no one forgets about it for a long time.
