The first step to finding your next favorite song was opening this article. The next is opening You Me At Six’s Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you listen to your music. If you stumbled upon this article by accident and are thinking, “Why should I listen to this band?” our answer is simple. With eight studio albums, there’s no shortage of options. Whether you’re in your party era or your cry-into-your-pillow era, they’ve got you covered! Still, eight studio albums can feel intimidating. With all that potential for your next favorite music, where do you start? Luckily, we’re here to help you dip your toes into You Me at Six’s collection, no matter what mood you’re feeling.
‘Underdog’
This one goes out to everyone who wants to sit in their anger for a minute. Maybe you got in a fight with a friend, or maybe you had a frustrating day at work. Or maybe you’re looking to get revenge on an ex. You Me At Six would relate to that one. And lucky for those of you going through this who don’t channel your rage into songwriting: they’ve done it for you. There’s no forgiveness in singer Josh Franceschi‘s voice as he tells the mysterious subject off. It all feels very much like imagining what you would say if you confronted an ex. “Just look at the mess you made,” as Josh says, is something we’d love to say in a fantasy world. So, it could be very therapeutic.
‘Fireworks’
Crying over a relationship that isn’t yours is something we’ve all done, right? Or maybe you’re dealing with heartbreak right now (in that case, our condolences). ‘Fireworks’ is the perfect song for either scenario. Sometimes a good cry is exactly what we need. And sometimes, the best way to do it is to listen to a song about a relationship that fell apart despite their best efforts. When the beat drops with Josh’s final acceptance that he can’t make this relationship work, the drawn-out notes resemble someone crying, so we might as well join in.
‘Who Needs Revenge When I’ve Got Ellen Rae’
After a couple of throwbacks, of course, we needed to throw in a favorite from this year’s release, Truth Decay. Allow us to set the scene: after crying over ‘Fireworks’, and getting your anger out with ‘Underdog,’ you’re ready to move on to the next phase of your life. To go into your carefree, party era, this song is a must-have. Josh has moved on to telling his ex that she is “so last summer.” This is the energy we want, and all in a song that we can dance to.
‘Bite My Tongue’ Featuring Oli Sykes
This one is for the day-one emos. Last year’s release of Sinners Never Sleep (10 Year Anniversary Edition) allowed us to revisit how powerful Josh Franceschi and Oli Sykes are together. Each one brings something different to the song, and the result is one of the most classic examples of the emo-pop genre. To those of you who spent the mid-2000s dressed in all black and sporting the bangs: if this song isn’t on your playlist, it needs to be.
‘Take On The World’
As maybe the band’s most popular song (at least if Spotify streams and an episode of The Vampire Diaries are any indication), we couldn’t finish this list without adding this song. And it just so happens that it’s also perfect for being in love. We know everyone has a love playlist, whether you’re currently in love or pining. We also know that this song is an essential addition to those playlists. After all, this is the relationship we all want: someone who will be with us through everything. Because with true love, we can take on the world and all that.
Now you have everything you need to take your first step into You Me at Six’s discography. From there, you may not be able to stop. So don’t feel intimidated by the eight albums, and don’t be afraid to check out the rest of their songs. If we missed any of your favorites, let us know at @thehoneypop on Twitter!
