In news that will surprise absolutely no one, ARMY and BTS are still obsessed with each other! Here at THP, we can’t believe we honestly thought that things would be quiet while all the members are you-know-where. We should’ve known better.
Just a week after we waved goodbye to Namjoon, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook for a while, Jimin has given us the best holiday gift we could’ve asked for. The mind, and voice, behind songs like ‘Promise’ has released ‘Closer Than This!’
Not to be confused with Namjoon’s ‘Closer’ or Jungkook’s ‘Closer To You,’ Jimin’s ‘Closer Than This’ is a gorgeous song given to ARMY to keep us company until 2025.
The Song
Ready for the tears? We know ARMY have likely all listened to ‘Closer Than This’ already, but if you haven’t, we strongly recommend that you don’t do it in public. We’ll be equally shocked and impressed if you don’t cry.
ARMY has been very lucky to receive many beautiful fan songs from BTS over the years, but this might be one of the best. The mid-tempo track is hopeful, soothing, and reassuring, as Jimin reminds fans he’ll always be here for us. It’s a lovely reminder that this period in BTS’ journey is a pit stop, not the finish line, as Jimin warmly sings, “Letting go of your hand for a moment, but it’s only a small comma in our story.”
With references to their discography – “On the spring day we meet again, I’ll tell you everything I couldn’t before” – ‘Closer Than This’ is a fond reminder of the past, as well as a gentle look to the future. The song exists in a way that is so wholly Jimin – entirely earnest whilst never feeling pushy at all. Gently building up to the final chorus of Jimin and a children’s choir, ‘Closer Than This’ is the ultimate comfort song, as well as the finale of his content series ThisIsJimin.
The Music Video
Honestly, whilst the song is emotional enough on its own, you can’t truly grasp its sentimentality until you watch the music video. It opens with Jimin sitting in the studio with some of BIGHIT’s iconic production team, discussing the purpose of the track, which adds to the reassuring, honest feeling of the track. In line with the messaging of ‘Closer Than This,’ the mv shows clips of Jimin and BTS throughout the years.
Rather than feeling like a flex of all they’ve achieved (which is, of course, legendary), it’s actually a celebration of BTS and ARMY’s shared memories. From their first daesang to ‘Like Crazy’ hitting Billboard Hot 100 number one, all of these clips represent moments that ARMY have been a part of and conversations that BTS and their fans have had together.
