The weather is getting warmer, the nights are getting longer, and the song of the summer is here! It’s been a dark world since Little Mix began their hiatus over two years ago, but after waiting oh so patiently, Perrie has finally blessed us with her debut solo single, ‘Forget About Us!’
A summery pop bop, ‘Forget About Us’ is an ode to past lovers and remembering what once was and could have been. Speaking about the single in a press release, Perrie shares: “I look back on past relationships and do think happily about those times. Do I want to be there now? No. It didn’t work out that way and if it was supposed to be it would have happened. Relationships have been a huge part of my life and they’ve made me who I am now. I think it’s a nice sentiment to be honest about and it’s super relatable.”
‘Forget About Us’ marks the beginning of Perrie’s solo endeavors. Her fans, Auras, have been sitting pretty while waiting for this moment in the British beauty’s career, and from here, her journey only goes onwards and upwards. She’s been hard at work creating her debut album, and though ‘Forget About Us’ is our first taste of her solo era, Perrie has been spilling some tea on her upcoming record.
Her debut album is of an eclectic sound
Perrie is no one-trick pony. Her lungs of steel and powerful voice give her the advantage of being able to ace pretty much any kind of vocal task she desires, and so she’s decided to dabble in a little bit of everything with this debut record. From rock’nroll and Motown to country and 80s with, of course, a splash of bright and bold pop, Perrie has given it all a go.
“Going into sessions as a solo artist now and being able to say what I want and I feel is just the most amazing experience. I never had the confidence to do that before, but this process has allowed me to believe in myself and explore all my different emotions and different parts of my life,” she shares in a press release. We’re so stoked to hear the finished result!
She’s worked with some of the best people in the business for the album
Perrie has been in the studio giving it her all, and she’s had an incredible team of people to work with, including superstars RAYE and Ed Sheeran (the latter who worked on ‘Forget About Us,’ as well as our girl Kamille, Johnny McDaid, Feli Ferraro (BTS, Normani) and Jon Bellion (Maroon 5, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber)
The album was mostly recorded in her home studio
Perrie is enjoying the early years of motherhood and has truly been able to balance her job as a mother and being a recording artist by working at her home studio in North London. In fact, the idea came from her fiancé, Alex, who suggested they turn an unused dining room into a studio, which he then built for her to be able to work in. “All of the content that I’ve done documenting the album has been made at home too—all the fans are commenting like, ‘Does she ever leave the house?’” Perrie laughs. We love the idea, though!
She wasn’t keen on writing at first, but is thankful she came around to the idea
Speaking in the press release for ‘Forget About Us,’ Perrie shares: “Going into sessions as a solo artist now and being able to say what I want and I feel is just the most amazing experience. I never had the confidence to do that before, but this process has allowed me to believe in myself and explore all my different emotions and different parts of my life.” But that wasn’t always the case.
Speaking to NME in a recent interview about how she was hesitant to write, Perrie shares: “I was just so insecure, I think. I was just so shy! It’s really a drastic change when you go from being in a girl group and having your girls constantly with you holding your hand, like I was literally the baby, so I’d just be like “help me” all the time and it can be quite overwhelming when there’s loads of people in a room and you’re supposed to be talking about your feelings and your emotions and what you wanna put in that song. I sat down with my label at the start and I was like “guys, I don’t wanna write anything. I just wanna be sent songs, I just wanna sing them.”
Her team convinced her to try some sessions with friends and people she’s worked with a lot in the past who made her feel comfortable. “The more more I did sessions, the more I became more confident, the more I was I was writing down lyric ideas, concept ideas, and then I startred taking the reigns a bit more myself, and I think it just kind of spiralled from there!”
When asked about what she’d say to the version of herself two years ago who didn’t want to write, Perrie says: “oh, you silly little sausage! You didn’t know what you were gonna do!” We’re so glad we get to hear songs from her!
This album is really personal to Perrie
Perrie has drawn inspiration from a variety of topics for her debut album, but of course, she’s written songs about the two most important men in her life. She let slip to NME that there is a song she co-wrote with RAYE about Alex, and a song about Axel, which he even features on, “He features on one of the songs and all he wants to do is listen to himself, it’s so cute!” We just know our hearts are going to melt when we hear it.
We are absolutely in love with ‘Forget About Us’ and beyond excited now that Perrie has kickstarted her solo career. We just know her debut album is going to be incredible!
