Getting to chat with Boy in Space made us into even bigger fans than we were beforehand, and now we are even more excited for all the music that is to come over the next few months!
We chatted all about the new Boy in Space track ‘Finally Fine Without You,’ about what songs helped him during his healing process, and so much more! Let’s jump in!
Listen to ‘Finally Fine Without You’ here!
Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to speak to us. To kick us off, if you were to describe who Boy In Space is as an artist, how would you describe your sound/message? Thanks for having me! I would say my music is very emotionally driven and just a good space for people to feel. The sound is more in the melody language rather than production, and I try to write strong but fun and exciting melodies that pull you in from the get-go.
When making the decision to make music under an artist’s name like ‘Boy in Space’ instead of your actual name, what goes into that thought process? Do you think that separation allows for more of a character that you can channel to form? Like a YUNGBLUD, or a girl in red of sorts? For me, Boy In Space felt like a world where I could express my creativity more freely, and yes my normal name Robin didn’t feel as inspiring.
‘Finally Fine Without You’ is out into the world, and it obviously comes from a personal place. What emotions go through your head before you release such a personal project? There’s a fine line in how much to reveal to the world, so I try to keep some true events in my lyrics but I usually add more spice to the story, and can even change big parts because I think it’s more important for the song to be interesting.
Piggybacking on that last question: Once the song is out, and you’re able to see firsthand the way fans are relating to and responding to the track, how is that internalized? Is it healing in a way? By the time my music gets to the ears of my fans, I have usually already gone through all the stages. But it’s a good reminder of how I have felt and kinda works like a milestone.
We can already tell that ‘Finally Fine Without You’ is going to be the soundtrack for a lot of broken hearts. So, we were curious: Is there a song out there that you listen to when you’re feeling that way? One that you listened to a lot while you were crafting this record? There’s not a particular song I listened to while I wrote the song but lately, I have been listening to Kacey Musgraves – Deeper Well and it’s definitely helped me in my personal life.
This year comes with a year of reinvention of sorts for you. What does that look like? And how does that process begin for an artist? I hope it’s gonna be seen in everything I do this year. I feel so much more engaged in what I do and I think it’s already been seen in my releases so far, and the beautiful thing is that I don’t know the full story yet, and that’s exciting.
We have to talk about your collaboration with Alan Walker, a master of his craft. What was that partnership like? Working with Alan was a great experience and a smooth one. He’s a real professional and so is his team.
Was there a moment when you realized you could write ‘Finally Fine Without You?’ That you were at the point of beginning to move on? To be honest I was kind of foreshadowing my life with that song. And drew inspiration from other sources like friends, movies, and family. It does suit my life better now.
With ‘Finally Fine Without You’ and ‘Atom Bomb,’ are we looking at pieces to a bigger puzzle, or as of now, are these stand-alone tracks? These songs are a part of the groundwork towards a project I’m releasing towards the summer, so get ready for some more bops!
As we continue into 2024, what can fans expect from Boy in Space? This year my fans can expect a lot of music and a lot of attention to details in everything I release. I’m in a great space creatively and I hope it’s gonna show!
