The MUSE era is officially underway! Jimin has gifted us with his pre-release single, ‘Smeraldo Garden Marching Band,’ and it’s truly put a spring in our step! With references to the past and a march towards the future, this joyous confession is already one of the songs of the summer.
Looking Back
Yep, you heard that right. Jimin really did sing, “It all began on June 12th,” which – as every ARMY knows – was the date of BTS’ first release and the day before their official debut. All we can say is… be still our beating [purple] hearts!

And that’s not the only BTS reference Jimin gives us in ‘Smeraldo Garden Marching Band,’ either. In fact, ‘Smeraldo’ references a fictional flower from BTS and Steve Aoki’s 2018 collaboration ‘The Truth Untold,’ from masterpiece Love Yourself: 轉 TEAR. We absolutely love the fact that Jimin chose to enter this new era with references to two of BTS’ most difficult periods, especially reflecting on them with such positivity, and surrounded by collaborators both old and new.
In fact, ‘Smeraldo Garden Marching Band’ has a dual purpose; it’s the name of Jimin’s single and the name of his team. During the creation of FACE, Jimin collected a core team of Pdogg, GHSTLOOP, and EVAN. You’ll likely recognize these names from across the credits of BTS’ glittering discography, so in a way, it makes sense that they would start to refer to themselves as the ‘Smeraldo Garden Marching Band!’
Marching Forwards
Describing this single as fun feels like we’re underselling it, but that’s honestly what it is. ‘Smeraldo Garden Marching Band’ is playful, coy, and unapologetically joyful all at once. Hearing it for the first time genuinely lifted our spirits! Basically, if there is a song that has managed to crystallize the feeling of having a crush, it’s this one.
Sonically and lyrically, ‘SGMB’ kind of does what it says on the tin. Lyrically, it’s a playful confession (aka it’s ‘The Truth Untold’). In terms of the production, you absolutely get the marching band that you signed up for! The brassy orchestra is paired with a hip-hop underbelly; there’s so much going on in this track, and we love every part of it. Jimin’s vocals are crystal clear, and Loco’s rap adds so much to the bounciness of the song. Jimin himself asked Loco for the collaboration, and we can totally see his vision!
It’s also fascinating to compare ‘Smeraldo Garden Marching Band’ with ‘Set Me Free Pt.2,’ Jimin’s pre-release single from his previous album. Both songs are so tied to his identity, but they couldn’t be more different! Where ‘SGMB’ embraces the silly and playful energy, ‘SMF Pt.2’ was intense and defiant. But the duality only speaks to Jimin’s versatility as an artist! ‘SMF Pt.2’ was the perfect choice for setting the tone for FACE, so we can’t wait to see how MUSE shapes up after hearing ‘SGMB.’ Here’s to impatiently waiting for July 19th!
