Hey Honeybees! In case you haven’t heard, State Champs are back with not one but TWO brand new singles: ‘Silver Cloud’ and ‘Too Late To Say’! In addition to the new songs, the band also announced they’ll be releasing their fifth album, State Champs, on November 8th.
After almost a two year hiatus, pop-punk royalty, State Champs is back! Both ‘Silver Cloud’ and ‘Too Late to Say’ are very reminiscent of the band’s older work in addition to elements of growth and maturity. Both tracks showcase State Champs’ trademark edgy, high energy, pop-punk sound but with a twist to create a brand new sonic experience!
Thematically, the two songs dive into the insecurity of being an “old” band in a new era. The album was written and recorded in a time of change for the band where they were hit with the reality of life: marriage, starting a family, settling down. This shift is very clearly reflected in the lyrics and tone of the release. Every moment of both tracks is intentional and the passion that State Champs has for not only the music, but for each other. As the band stated perfectly back in 2022, State Champs is ‘Here to Stay’!
“When we stepped back and looked at the songs, sonically and thematically, it’s a great vision of who we are. Every era of State Champs exists within this record”
Bassist Ryan Scott Graham on State Champs
Our Favorite Lyrics:
‘Silver Cloud’
“Take it back to clarity
When the hat was backwards, I found a pattern
Every town where we found a place like home (Home)
There was no time to waste while dreaming wide awake
Until the mountains move, there’s more to prove”
We love this verse! Particular because it serves as a parallel between classic pop-punk traits and more “grown up” narratives. The callback to the backwards hat is something any long term fan of the genre will instantly recognise. However, the band recognizing both their love hometown and finding pieces of it in every place shows growth and strays from the stereotypical “I want to leave my hometown” motto.
‘Too Late To Say’
“Maybe a part of me doubted
So I never said the things I should’ve said
It turns out that it’s a challenge, the balance
I’m probably thinking too much about it
The sentiment was lost, but I found it along the way”
These lyrics stick out to us in particular because they truly highlight the message that State Champs wanted to portray with the album. They discuss how the band felt lost and didn’t know which direction their future was headed in. As always, they’re delivered in a fun and punchy “straight to the point” sort of way. Either way, we’re SO glad Champs found their voice again and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for these superstars!
Ready To Hear Them Live?
State Champs are gearing up for a very busy fall! In addition to the album, State Champs has also announced they’ll be heading out on a US headlining tour in November. They’ll be accompanied by some other THP faves including Knuckle Puck, Daisy Grenade, and Meet Me @ The Altar on the trek. Tickets are on sale and going quick, so be sure to grab them while you can!
