We’re still barely processing the fact that DAY6 is back. And when we say they’re back, we mean that DAY6 is back for good. After their massively anticipated masterpiece of a comeback earlier this year with Fourever, DAY6 are back even bigger than ever with Band Aid – and they’re already making history! Its title track, ‘Melt Down,’ earned them their first All-Kill in Korean charts within 24 hours of its release – the first for a band in this decade, the first JYP group to do so since 2020, and the records are countless. We already knew DAY6 was the nation’s band, but they’ve gone up to the stratosphere, and with good reason: Band Aid is an unskippable masterpiece, and here’s why you should be listening to it!
‘Melt Down’
‘Melt Down’ is the star of the show, and with good reason. There is a lot of range in DAY6‘s music. They deliver the most heartbreaking music out there but also the most bright music to fill you with hope and love. ‘Melt Down’ fits perfectly in the second category with its bright, cheerful, and colorful energy. It has all the elements of a perfect upbeat DAY6 song: striking vocals, addictive melodies and rhythm, and incredible lyrics. ‘Melt Down’ is all about surviving hardships thanks to meeting someone who changes your life. This song is about how someone can turn your winter into summer and your black and white into color. And that’s precisely what DAY6’s music has done for us.
Band Aid
DAY6 make our lives better with every song they release, and that includes, of course, their b-sides. While ‘Melt Down’ is cheerful and bright, it also implies a moment of doubt, pain, and struggle. And that’s exactly what the opening track, ‘Monster,’ portrays. This perfect rock song, clearly inspired by 90s British rock bands, is nothing short of a masterpiece. Not only are the lyrics hauntingly beautiful yet heartbreaking, but the power the song holds with the vocals and melodies is just indescribable. ‘Monster’ is already one of DAY6‘s best songs.
But once the color comes and the pain disappears, DAY6 gives us some of their most cheerful and upbeat songs. ‘Melt Down’ leads the way for b-sides like ‘She Smiled,’ a fun love song that complements the title track perfectly. It’s the ideal feel-good and carefree song to forget all your worries. ‘Shxtty Game’ has that same energy, yet in a very different way. It leans in the rock and roll genre as they compare the ups and downs of life to a game. ‘Shxtty Game’ is a witty and energic song that helps you push through the tough times and lets you know it’s okay to have them, but you’ll also make it out. The rock and roll influence of the album comes to a total blast with, of course, ‘Help Me Rock&Roll.’ It’s fun, upbeat, and an absolute banger that showcases all of DAY6’s range.
‘COUNTER’ is an astonishing song with so many elements to its composition, production, and instrumentation that you’ll find something new every time you listen to it. It goes from some softer moments to full blasts of energy. And we cannot talk about this track without mentioning the insanity of the drums here – Dowoon really outdid himself here. The last two songs take a turn and show DAY6’s darker side. ‘I’m Fire’ takes us back to a similar sound we found in ‘Monster’ with a dark break-up song and so much angst. And ‘Still There’ immediately joins the list of DAY6‘s best closing tracks with some of their best vocal moments, the dramatics in the melodies, the emotions in every note, and every word as they sing about struggling to move on from a breakup. ‘I’m There’ and ‘Still There’ bring the album full circle, both thematically and sonically. It is truly the epitome of how DAY6’s Band Aid is an absolute masterpiece, and rightfully so, their biggest release to date.
But one thing Band Aid has taught us is that there is truly no stopping DAY6 now. With multiple All-Kills and their biggest world tour incoming, this is DAY6’s long-due moment to shine brighter than ever before after 9 years of building up and growing as the incredible band they are. We’re so here for it.
