When we think about Florence + the Machine, we can’t help but imagine her as an Unseelie queen. Listen to any of her songs, and we bet you pictured her dancing in the middle of the woods, underneath the moonlight. Florence came out of a fable. Because we love Florence and since Autumn is the best time of the year for us to read and write, we at the Honey Pop did our assignment. After a callous decision, these are five songs by Florence + The Machine to listen to this Autumn. Who knows? Maybe in this list, you’ll find the inspiration for a story we would love to read.
‘Blinding’ from Lungs
If you’re a moonchild, this song is for you. The magic of this track is the way Florence talks about love and pain with elements from fantasy literature. The song starts with Florence whispering, and then the drums, the viola, the cello, the violin, and the harp join her. This unison creates an atmosphere out of a fantasy book, and we are sure all the bookworms would love to have it in their reading playlist. But, in contrast, all of the songs from Lungs should be in your reading playlist!!
‘Which Witch’ from How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
Is there anything more autumn than a song about witches? We don’t think so! One of the beauties of Florence is her storytelling skills. In 2015, Florence told Vice in an interview that this song is about a witch trial in LA. This allows us to imagine the whole story of a woman who’s accused of something she didn’t do. Her crime? Being in love. In addition, the highlight of this track is the bridge, when a marching band takes over.
‘My Boy Builds Coffins’ from Lungs
This third track is a nursery rhyme with a dark twist. The lyrics are about this boy reflecting on death and how he builds coffins for everyone, including us. Breaking the fourth wall type of moment. The atmosphere of this song, in our minds, is an old village from centuries ago. There, in the middle of the chaos of the past ages, there’s a boy in a workshop building coffins for living.
‘What the Water Gave Me’ from Ceremonials
For a bit of context, in an interview for the San Diego Union-Tribune, back in 2016, Florence said the following:
“I think it’s often that I feel something so big that it’s hard to describe. And water is a good way to describe something that feels so large and out of your control that you couldn’t put it in words.”
Florence Welch for San Diego Union-Tribune
As a result, the track begins with only the dark instrumental. Then, Florence joins in. The song is pretty obscure when you pay attention to the lyrics. Besides, the rhythm reminds us of pirate tales and their journeys through the sea. If this season you want to read something with this vibe, we highly recommend Fable by Adrienne Young.
‘King’ from Dance Fever
This alternative rock song is the perfect track to listen to by yourself. Florence, in our hearts, is this century Stevie Nicks, and what would Stevie Nicks be without dancing? Blast this song into your speakers and dance. After all, the album is called Dance Fever. Diving into the lyrics, again, through storytelling, Florence reflects on her and her career. We don’t know what the future holds for Florence, but we are sure that no matter what, she will always be ‘King’.
After listening to any of these songs, we are 100% sure that if you aren’t a Florence + the Machine fan, you will be one. In other words, we hope these five songs will be part of your soundtrack this autumn and, hopefully, part of your life.
