If you haven’t been keeping up with the legend that is SHINee’s ONEW, consider this your official wake-up call. Our favorite vocal king is back with his 5th mini-album, TOUGH LOVE, and let’s just say… wow. Those 15 minutes of the EP were way too short—we officially need a 10-hour version!
In fact, did you know that ONEW took total creative control for this comeback? We checked the credits, and he is a writer on every single track and even served as a composer for the title track ‘TOUGH LOVE’ and the b-side ‘Lie.’ You can truly feel his soul in this project; it’s his artistry through and through.
ONEW’s ‘TOUGH LOVE’: From Mellow Chills To Full-Screen Thrills
The title track, ‘TOUGH LOVE,’ is a literal masterpiece. The beginning is so mellow and cuts deep with the lyrics and visuals: “Don’t you know it hurts like hell to see you be your shadow of yourself.” It honestly hurts us to hear this right now, but it’s the truth we all need. 😭 We’ve all been there—watching someone we care about just fade away, and ONEW’s voice captures that fragile, painful honesty so perfectly.
But then, the shift happens. It just changes to a higher beat and goes full upbeat. And can we talk about that visual transition? The way the video goes from a restricted square into filling the whole screen feels like a literal breath of fresh air. And when his voice drops into that lower register? Uff, don’t even get us started! It’s such a powerful contrast to the soft opening.
We think this is the kind of tough love that isn’t just about being mean. It’s about that necessary push that finally moves you toward your true potential. It’s confident, it’s bold, and it’s ONEW proving he can own any sound he touches.
‘Dot dot dot (…)’ And That “What Are We” Energy
Those soft and high tones in the beginning are pure heaven. Then it shifts into a groovier singing style. We love how it captures that space where you’re caught in a non-stop loop of texting and FaceTime, but you’re still just drawing lines at just being friends. It’s the ultimate anthem for anyone stuck in that “maybe friend or something in between love” phase where the chemistry is high, but the status is… well, ‘Dot dot dot.’
‘Flex on Me’ And Our 2010s R&B Nostalgia
This was so unexpected, but okay! The beat and his singing flow are stunning. The beginning reminds us of those slower, yearning R&B songs from the early 2010s—it’s giving us major nostalgia. This part is absolute heaven and made us melt into a puddle on the floor: “You’re the only girl I’d do this for / Only girl that I adore.” And then, during the later part of the song, where he slowly goes “flex on me” and adds that little laugh? Yes, puddle on the floor #2. Thank you, ONEW. 🫠
Seeing this side of him on the TOUGH LOVE EP is exactly what we needed.
‘Lie’ And The Heartbreak Of Being An Extra
This one blew us away with that deeper tone and a beat that just makes you feel the hurt. Honestly, we can already see this being the go-to karaoke song for anyone going through a messy breakup. 🎤 The melody blends exhaustion and anger perfectly. It perfectly captures the suffocating feeling of being trapped in someone else’s “monodrama” as you slowly lose your own light.
It’s such a powerful contrast to the upbeat tracks, and seeing that dazzling light turn into a sharp dagger gave us literal chills. This is definitely one of the most raw and honest moments on ONEW’s TOUGH LOVE.
‘X, Oh Why?’ And That Experimental Goodbye
ONEW really went for it here with a beat that’s way more experimental than anything we’ve heard from him before. It perfectly captures that cliché end where the spark has just cooled down and, as he sings, “In the end, love is just each person’s monologue.”
It’s not about being wrong or right; it’s just about finding your own wonderful life separately. Honestly, it’s the most confident way he could have wrapped up the journey of the ONEW THOUGH LOVE EP era.
