Defying China: A Memoir By Tsultrim Dolma & Rebecca Wei Hsieh

Our next Women’s History Month book is Defying China! This memoir follows a Tibetan teen activist, Tsultrim, who, under an oppressive Chinese occupation, received no education and was financially struggling. As she grew older, Tsultrim found and joined protests for the Tibetan independence movement and its liberation from the People’s Republic of China. After being arrested, she is sent to a detention centee known for its cruel torture methods. Read this book to follow Tsultrim’s journey as she stands up for her political beliefs and freedoms, and her experience after being released and then escaping to the United States. Defying China is a story of bravery, determination, and courage that we can’t help but be inspired by.

Coming Home (Adapted For Young Adults) By Brittney Griner With Michelle Burford
Our last Women’s History Month book rec is Coming Home! It follows Brittney Griner, a WNBA player who was arrested in Moscow after carrying medically prescribed hash oil while travelling to play for the Russian women’s basketball team. In this book, Brittney tells the story of how she was suddenly under arrest and trying to understand a foreign legal system. She talks in depth about her experience in a Russian penal colony and her eventual release during a prisoner swap. However, she not only talks about her pain, but also about how the love of her wife, Cherelle, allowed her to stay strong. It truly showcases how much love and support can help us through our darkest times.
