From ‘Summertime Of Our Lives’ to ‘Flower,’ some of our favorite Cody Simpson songs over the years have been the lovestruck ones in which the Y in Cody’s name stands for “Yearning.” We have a beautiful new addition to that list in the form of his brand new single, ‘Fluent!’ The song plays with the idea of being fluent in a language to share how Cody wants to be so close to a partner that he’s fluent in her body language and subtle expressions. Any true hopeless romantic wants to be understood that deeply, and until you find your own happily ever after, ‘Fluent’ is right here to sweep you off of your feet.
It’s clear that Cody has been a master manifestor, having pursued both his musical and professional swimming dreams, but that kind of worked against him this time around. He recently experienced a vocal cord injury and dislocated his knee, pushing him to communicate through body language while also having trouble moving. The video casts him as a mime trying to express his thoughts and feelings as his own knee injury slows him down, drawing inspiration from Cody’s musical theater experiences and love for Charlie Chaplin.
Dealing with this vocal cord surgery has been a blow, but it won’t stop me dropping music. So glad I was able to put the finishing touches on ‘Fluent,’ a track I’ve loved for some time. The irony of the lyrical content wasn’t lost on me either considering I’m on vocal rest, and all I’ve got right now is body language! Hah. Hope you enjoy this one.

As Cody put it in a YouTube comment on the ‘Fluent’ video, our “baby blue spring turned red hot summer.” He’s been coming in hot all year – first, by teasing his musical comeback on social media and making us feel very old nostalgic with videos set to OG songs like ‘All Day’ and a throwback photo of his younger self in a blue t-shirt.
Speaking of that blue, he’s been so clever with his visual marketing this era. Blue has been a big piece of the visual puzzle around his work for ages, dating back to the cover art of his debut Paradise album. He changed his profile photos to a light blue square and started using light blue heart emojis before ‘Baby Blue’ and its complementary track, ‘When It Comes To Loving You,’ dropped in March. So we were primed to know a new release was on the way when he changed his profile photo to a vibrant red, matching the red curtain in the ‘Fluent’ music video and the passion in the lyrics!
Let’s celebrate ‘Fluent’ and Cody’s musical evolution by testing your fluency in his lyrics. We’ll provide a lyric with a word or phrase missing, and you can test yourself to see if you know what fills the blank from the options given. Don’t worry, we’ll add the ‘Baby Blue’ and ‘When It Comes To Loving You’ videos between the questions and answer key so you don’t get any lines spoiled.
