“What’s worse: being wanted but not loved, or loved but not wanted?” That’s the captivating question Dove Cameron asks us in her latest single, ‘Sand.’ It’s a powerful statement that probably made you stop and think, as it did to us. ‘Sand’ serves as a glimpse into Dove’s world and has us all eagerly anticipating more emotional rollercoasters with her upcoming album Alchemical: Volume 1, dropping on the first of December.
It All Began With A Diary Entry
‘Sand’ is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that describes the ache for a connection out of reach. Born from Dove’s own poem turned diary entry, it delves into the depths of losing someone meant for a lifetime and the emotional repercussions. The accompanying music video, choreographed by the renowned Kyle Hanagami (known for working with BLACKPINK and TXT), reflects this. With its deep lyricism and cinematic, timeless sound, Dove’s vocals, paired with a chilling pre-chorus, create an immersive experience that honestly gives us goosebumps.
Lyrics We Can’t Stop Thinking About
You’ve definitely caught the vibe about Dove’s latest masterpiece, and the lyrics are a true standout. Her narration is pure poetry, and we need to talk about it!
The song’s opening line, “What’s worse: being wanted but not loved, or loved but not wanted?” packs a punch, and sadly, it’s not a rhetorical question. Either way, we honestly don’t have an answer and don’t think we ever will. But it brilliantly leaves you emotionally attached to the song right from the beginning and emotionally invested in the story to unfold.
Another lyric we can’t stop thinking about is, “But you have more pieces of me than the desert has sand. And I have less pieces of you than I can hold in my hand.” Dove took the imagery of sand grains slipping through your fingers and made a hauntingly brilliant pre-chorus that lets you see how vulnerable Dove’s storytelling is.
Whilst we could give you a running commentary on every single lyric, the final line we have to discuss is, “I tried to bargain with the stars. For more than half your heart.” It’s so insane because it holds both a sense of hope and sets you up for future betrayal. Basically, she’s a genius!
Alchemical: Volume 1
‘Sand’ by Dove Cameron really cements her artistry, storytelling, and sound. Moreover, she has a compelling songwriting talent that makes us stop and reflect on our own experiences. The forthcoming album Alchemical: Volume 1 marks part one of this project. The two-part project will allow us to dive into Dove’s world and the journey to healing. Specifically, Dove’s own experiences with love, loss, and trauma lead to an eventual transformation.
