5 Female 1980’s Characters That Radiate ‘yes, and?’ Energy

To quote stan Twitter, “The drought is over!” Ariana Grande is back, and she is serving us the perfect cocktail of nostalgia and now that every generation can dance to. Her new single, ‘yes, and?’ has been a long time coming, and it did not disappoint! The choreography, the vocals, and the vibes: it’s all there. We have a feeling we’ll be quoting, “Say that sh*t with your chest,” on a daily basis because that’s the kind of energy we need going into 2024.

‘yes, and?’

Paying homage to Miss Paula Abdul and her iconic ‘Cold Hearted’ music video, Ariana Grande put her own unique spin on the ‘yes, and?’ visuals. While both put on performances (with flawless choreography) for the seemingly stuffy executives in suits, Ariana adds a layer of art and depth with the addition of statues symbolizing being put on display or judged by others. Which, as we listen to the lyrics, speaks volumes. In the end, some of her critics even come up to join her as they finally understand and embrace her.

lf you find yourself in a dark situation, just turn on your light

Ariana Grande in ‘yes, and?’

The song, clearly influenced by ‘Vogue’ by the legendary Madonna, brings the infectious dance beats of the past to the 21st century to captivate a whole new generation… and create a new generation of “it girls” in the process. ‘Vogue’ was released at the beginning of 1990, but the infamous 80s sound was still deeply intertwined, which gives ‘yes, now?’ that throwback feel. That’s why we think these five prolific 1980s movie characters radiate that “yes, and?” energy we’re looking for!

Stephanie From Grease 2

This one might be cheating, but we hope you’ll let it slide. Although the movie is set in the early 70s, this musical sequel was released in 1982, starring the incredible Michele Pfeiffer as Stephanie. A bad girl on the outside, but a hopeless romantic at her core, she doesn’t care what people think about her. She’ll push against expectations for her “cool rider” saying, “yes, and?”

Heather Chandler From Heathers

One of the most popular girls at Westerburg High, everyone fears her (but secretly wants to be her!) She’s confident, and she’s powerful… we can overlook the mean girl act because she does it oh so well. No one screams the line, “My tongue is sacred; I speak what I like. Protected, sexy, discerning with my time.” more than Heather Chandler.

Julie From Valley Girl

Valley Girl was, in its time, a modern-day Romeo and Juliet. All about a punk and a valley girl who the world never saw together… and will do anything to keep apart. Julie is beautiful and fabulous, but most importantly, she fights for what she wants in the end. Because in the words of Ariana herself: “Why do you care so much who’s **** I ride?”

Mercedes Lane From License To Drive

Now, Mercedes Lane may have spent the majority of the movie in the trunk of the car as the reckless teen boy hijinx ensued, but during her time on screen, she oozed the 80s “it girl” aesthetic. As the girl of everyone’s dreams, we have no doubt Mercedes would find herself putting on her lipstick, teasing her hair, and getting ready for an incredible Saturday night out while blaring ‘yes, and?’ through her boombox. That’s what “it girls” do!

Linda Barrett From Fast Times At Ridgemont High

The fantasy girl, Linda, was described as not the girl next door. Being desired by most always sounds great on the surface, but it can also come with a bad reputation… even if you don’t deserve it. Still, you never let that bring down your light. Be sure of yourself and remember: “Your energy is yours, and mine is mine,so live your authentic truth because the right one will always see it.

So, what are you waiting for? Put on your best leotard, get in front of the mirror, and keep streaming “yes, and?” right now. It’s time to radiate your own 80’s “it girl” energy!
