Exclusive Interview: We’re ‘So Excited’ About Daimy Lotus!

And we’re back with the latest in our exclusive interviews — Daimy Lotus! We’re huge fans here at THP, and having worked with some of your faves, Daimy is sure to become your new pop-rock obsession thanks to her sadbangers.

Fresh off the back of the release of ‘So Excited,’ we were thrilled to talk to Daimy about the single, her inspirations, and her experiences writing for others in this interview!

Daimy Lotus Exclusive Interview

Congratulations on the release of ‘So Excited!’ How has the reaction to the song been?
Thank you! The reactions have been great actually. I think people really feel the depth and emotions in the song which is really special because in the end that’s what this is all about: connecting with people.

The lyrics and topic of ‘So Excited’ are so raw and honest. Does the vulnerability in a song like that make you more nervous to release it? Or does it feel more empowering?
With every release I feel that people get to know me a little bit better but I also get to understand myself better. It’s almost like connecting the pieces of a massive puzzle and it’s honestly a really exciting feeling. So I guess it’s more empowering than nervous.

We love the styling in the ‘So Excited’ music video! It’s giving a Grease T-Birds and Pink Ladies crossover! What was the inspo behind the aesthetic of the music video?
Haha thank you! Well, I’ve always wanted to record a classic rooftop video so I asked my friends to join me and that kinda got the ball rolling. As you might have noticed, pink is my lead color and I’m a sucker for (faux)leather and chains so my outfit came together pretty quickly. I get inspiration from grungy but sexy and feminine fashion styles.

If a new fan discovers you through ‘So Excited’ which of your older tracks should they try out first?
Oof, that’s a tough question. Guess it depends on what mood you’re in but ‘Enemy’ is one of my personal favorites.

The track is a total sadbanger, which we always love here at THP. Have you got any sadbanger recommendations for us too?
100%! ‘Mad’ by YUNGBLUD, ‘Giving Up’ by The Used, ‘Love Letter’ by Knox, ‘I’m a Mess’ by Avril Lavigne & YUNGBLUD, ‘Liquor Store On Mars’ by Kelsy Karter & The Heroines. My first independent release ‘Emotionally F***ed’ is also quite the sadbanger.

You toured earlier this year and you just wrapped up some shows as part of Popronde 23! What were those experiences like?
I love being on stage so much.. it’s my favorite thing to do, so being able to do shows after focussing on writing for so many years, for my project and other projects, has been great! We played at the coolest cafes and gay bars so it’s been good fun!

Have your writing processes changed at all as a result of all of these live shows?
Not really. I always imagine what it’d be like playing a song live during the writing process. It’s something that automatically happens in my brain. The only thing that has changed is the amount of writing sessions I’ve been doing while touring. Having to focus on live shows and preparing them kinda forced me to do less sessions cause there simply isn’t ‘enough’ time.

We’re somehow(!) coming towards the end of 2023 already! What have been some of your other stand out moments from this year?
Well, the shows have been great, I’ve released 9 singles independently, I’ve been in London (my fav city) a lot to write new music, my song ‘OCD’ was played by BBC Introducing Rock on Radio 1, I went to Korea for the first time in my life to write K-Pop songs with the most amazing writers and producers from all over the world. So a lot has happened, lots of ‘firsts’ for me and I’m super excited to see what 2024 has in store!

And what can we look forward to from you in 2024?
I am currently writing for my first album which I’m super excited about! I don’t have an exact date yet cause I want everything to feel right and I wanna make sure that this album gets the attention it deserves, but I’m thinking somewhere late 2024. I’m also planning to do some shows in London and maybe Los Angeles, so that’s something I’m really looking forward too.

We love that you have such a clear sound with your solo work, but we also love that you celebrate the work you do with other artists too – even if your name isn’t necessarily attached to the work in the same way! If someone is looking to explore further, which songs you’ve worked on that aren’t Daimy Lotus tracks would you recommend? Do you have any personal favorites?
Thank you! I recently had my first K-Pop release with this girl group named Weeekly. I wrote a song for them called ‘Good Day.’ My other two favorites at the moment are ‘Breathe In’ by PRAANA, Klur & Kuala which I co-wrote and sang, and ‘Coffee’ by J.flowers.mp3 ft. Ralph Taylor which I co-wrote and did backing vocals for. You can find all releases that I’ve worked on in my Daimy Lotus Collabs playlist on Spotify!

You’ve mentioned artists like YUNGBLUD and Gayle as people you are inspired by, and we can totally see that! Who else inspires you currently? Do you have any particular heroes in the pop-punk space?
I currently listen a lot to Beauty School Dropout and Bring Me The Horizon but my all time favorites definitely include bands like Green Day, Foo Fighters, Paramore and Blink 182.

And lastly, what message would you like to share with The Honey POP readers today?
Be kind, be humble and be your authentic self because that’s your super power.

Thanks so much to Daimy for taking the time to chat with us!
