If You Like These Songs, Check Out Alice Merton’s ‘run away girl’

New year, new you. Don’t worry: here at the Honey POP, we’re still your old favorite fangirls. Alice Merton, though, is starting the new year by searching for herself. “Where the hell am I supposed to be?” That’s the one question she asks herself in ‘run away girl.’ If our readers are asking themselves the same question, we’d first like to tell you that this article is exactly where you should be. Beyond that, the best way to find this year’s new you is to find your next favorite song.

Alice Merton’s ‘run away girl’ is for the girls who crave more. It’s for the girls who want to get behind the wheel and leave everything behind. If that sounds like you, or maybe like another song you’re obsessed with, we promise you’ll love ‘run away girl.’ And if Alice Merton is already your favorite and you’re looking for more songs like this, we have the perfect list.

‘You’re Gonna Go Far’ by Noah Kahan

Noah Kahan is pretty much the spokesperson for the “leaving your hometown” community. If you haven’t heard ‘You’re Gonna Go Far’ by now, you can thank us after you’ve listened. Just like ‘run away girl’ is about freedom, ‘You’re Gonna Go Far’ will give you the support you need to find it. ‘You’re Gonna Go Far’ tells ‘run away girl’ not to feel guilty for shedding her past. While we’re at it, we might as well add all of Noah Kahan’s collection to this list.

‘Suburban Blues’ by The Aces

Continuing with the same theme, ‘Suburban Blues’ is like the prologue to ‘run away girl.’ And even though we’ve all had our moments of hopelessness, escaping the town that The Aces say there’s no way out of is a more optimistic ending. ‘Suburban Blues’ sounds a lot like ‘run away girl,’ too. So even if you’re paying no attention to lyrics and just want to vibe to the alternative indie sound, this one is for you.

‘Chinatown’ by Bleachers

‘Chinatown’ is another song with a similar sound. This time, you have someone to run away with. And instead of running away from something, you’re running to “chase every feeling.” If we’re being honest, Bleachers songs always sound like driving into a sunset to chase some feeling that will make you feel free. No more burdens of your past, just a bright future.

‘Matilda’ by Harry Styles

We’re still talking about a bright future, and we’re still encouraging you to go far, but now we’re doing it in a way that will summon every fangirl worldwide. We all know this song. If you don’t, again, thank us later. Or yell at us. Either way, we needed to include the song about accepting that your past doesn’t define you.

Alice Merton may have chosen New Year’s to give us an anthem about finding yourself, but you can start that journey any day. Any journey needs a soundtrack, and we guarantee these songs will help. And if your favorite song is already on this list, we promise ‘run away girl’ won’t let you down.
