RAYE Deserves Each of Her Seven BRIT Award Nominations

RAYE has had a huge year, and we’re not the only people who know it. She’s earned seven BRIT award nominations. That breaks the record for most nominations in one year! So, let’s recap every award she’s up for.

Artist of the Year

This is no surprise. In 2023, RAYE performed over 130 shows, and she’s nowhere near done. You can catch her performing at Coachella and continuing her headline tour in Australia and South America. You may also have seen her on any of the number of shows she’s been on, including The Tonight Show and GMA. She hasn’t stopped all year. That sounds like an artist of the year to us!

Best New Artist

It’s hard to believe My 21st Century Blues was a debut. But it’s true: she’s breaking records with her very first album. With such a masterpiece and the year that has brought her all over the globe and into our hearts, we think it’s safe to say we saw this nomination coming.

Album of the Year

Speaking of My 21st Century Blues, we would have been shocked if it wasn’t nominated. There are so many standouts that it’s hard even to pick one to talk about. Right away, she makes a statement by starting with an introduction and a speech, making it feel like we’re watching an intimate show, not just opening Spotify. ‘Oscar Winning Tears’ is an iconic album opening. In ‘The Thrill is Gone,’ she captures both the old-timey jazz vibes and the modern feeling of the rest of the album. ‘Ice Cream Man’ takes her album from danceable to a vulnerable truth that she is a “very f*cking brave, strong woman.” ‘Environmental Anxiety’ addresses the reality of our world today. The conclusion is that no matter what you’re looking for, RAYE has something for you.

Song of the Year x2

That’s right. The BRITs couldn’t even pick just one. The first nomination is for her own single ‘Escapism.’ The music video, which begins with RAYE dressed up and running from something, immediately draws us in. It’s a brilliant mix of first-person point of view and a rising disorientation, so we can’t help but feel like we become RAYE. Or maybe we’re the friends at the gossip session the next morning, while RAYE repeats that she doesn’t want to feel how she did last night.

Her next nomination is for her collab with Cassö and D-Block Europe. The music video for ‘Prada’ is like an idealized version of RAYE’s night in ‘Escapism.’ She has all the high-quality cars and clothes, and everything is for likes on social media.

Pop Act/R&B Act

Last but not least are her nominations for Pop and R&B acts. She’s up against Calvin Harris, Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Dean for pop act. Her competitors in the R&B category are Cleo Sol, Jorja Smith, Mahalia, and Sault.

No matter what happens at the BRIT awards on March 2, RAYE is already a record-breaker. Who do think will win each award? Let us know in the comments or by tweeting us @thehoneypop!
