Our Predictions For Holly Humberstone’s Work In Progress

Holly Humberstone’s Work In Progress EP may be the coolest idea we’ve ever heard. The four songs on the track list are demos that had been left behind throughout the years. Together, Holly says they represent older versions of herself mixed with her present self. We can’t help but think about how many artists have abandoned demos that could’ve ended up being our favorite songs.

Already, we can’t imagine our lives without the first song ‘Dive.’ And that makes us think, she could’ve written these songs at any point in her career. So what songs in her collection might these new ones sound like? We will, of course, be happy with whatever Holly releases, but here are a few songs we hope might be reflected in Work in Progress.

‘The Walls Are Way Too Thin’

One thing Holly excels at is her melodies, and this one is so much fun! We’ve already heard a snippet of ‘Down Swinging.’ So if any song on Work In Progress sounds anything like ‘The Walls Are Way Too Thin,’ we’re going with that one. It’s upbeat with darker lyrics. And if there’s one thing we love, it’s being able to dance to sad lyrics. What we have so far from ‘Down Swinging’ is a song about not letting her stress ruin her. In the same way, ‘The Walls Are Way Too Thin’ is definitely not happy. But she sings, “I’m not just gonna lay here and bite my tongue.” So maybe they’ll both be about making the best of a bad situation.

‘Lauren’

We’re thinking lyrics similar to ‘Lauren‘ might appear in Work In Progress. This song gets honest about where she’s gone wrong in her relationship. It’s something we’ve already seen in ‘Dive,’ where she warns someone to “tread lightly.” In ‘Lauren,’ she admits she’s a “flight risk” and hopes this person doesn’t hate her. We love her honesty and know that we should expect more of it. Just the idea of being a work in progress makes us think she might be taking a look at her own past mistakes.

‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’

The song ‘Work In Progress’ could be a bit like ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel.’ Like we said, we’re thinking this song will be about examining past mistakes. ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’ is one of our favorites because of the complex lyrics. She wonders how she can be someone’s “ray of light” when she can’t even take care of herself yet. This level of vulnerability is expected with a Holly Humberstone project, so we’re preparing for the worst with Work In Progress.

‘Into Your Room’

After ‘Work In Progress,’ we’ll need something more playful. We’re thinking that’s where ‘Easy Tiger’ comes in. Some of our favorite things about Holly’s music are the production and the bouncy feel of the instrumentals. ‘Into Your Room’ perfectly captures that. It’s about desperately chasing someone you think you need. She’s throwing stones at their window. She’s standing outside with a boombox, just for a chance for this person to notice her. Based on the line where she notes how she treated this person badly, this could, of course, be about getting someone back after a breakup. But for this purpose, we’re taking it as a silly crush. We might need something as light and harmless as that.
