‘Goddess’ By Laufey Is Heartbreaking In An Old Hollywood Kinda Way

Laufey

In mythology, many goddesses represent different things. One of the most famous is Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Among them is Laufey, our modern-day deity representing beautiful music. And we know we’re not alone in thinking this. Laufey has become the voice of our generation; her classical sound, paired with modern lyricism, has taken the world by storm, giving her well-deserved acclaim, including her very first Grammy win. Adding to her divine discography, Laufey announced Bewitched: The Goddess Edition, set for release on April 26th, and treated us to the lead single ‘Goddess.’

‘Goddess’ Is One Of Laufey’s Most Honest Stories Yet

Every iconic Goddess represents something, and Laufey is no exception. ‘Goddess’ has emerged as one of her most honest songs yet, sitting right next to ‘Letter To My 13 Year Old Self.’ Yep, Lauvers, it’s time to get the tissues out.

Laufey shared, “Goddess is my most honest song yet. I wrote it alone at my piano after feeling like someone had fallen in love with the version of me they’d seen on stage, just to find that I wasn’t what they projected once I was off stage. They deemed me to no longer be a shiny thing when the glamor wore off, reduced to skin and bone.”

Old Hollywood Meets Modern media

‘Goddess’ is a cinematic journey through heartache and revelation. Her delicate vocals sit on top of a stripped-back piano, giving it an old Hollywood feel. She sings as if narrating a scene you’d see in an Old Hollywood film, one where you end up shouting at the TV, pining for the heroine to confront a harsh truth about the reality behind her lover’s affection. And it’s this pain for Laufey, the heroine of this story, that we can’t help but feel. The visuals also scream Old Hollywood, which is made modern with chrome.

We’ve had stripped-back songs from Laufey before, like ‘Misty,’ for example. Yet, none have quite the level of introspection as this, truly marking this new era. The new album Bewitched: The Goddess Edition will feature four new tracks, including ‘Goddess’ as the lead single, and we’re wondering if the new tracks will hold this same level of sophistication.

It’s All About Progression

You know you’re in a new era when you can move on. The first half of ‘Goddess’ is full of lyrics that address the past lover, like “Were you surprised by me when you took me home? when the glamour wore off, reduced to skin and bones.” She breaks her heart at the beginning of these verses, which are so vulnerable as Laufey sings, “I’m so naive to think you loved me for me.”

The song then builds to what we can only describe as a passionate epiphany from Laufey, as she takes charge and declares, “You took me for a fool, you stole my youth, you watched me rise then killed my life, and now you know I’m not your f*cking goddess.” Yes, it’s serious, and we’re seriously heartbroken for Laufey. We didn’t know it was possible for a whole body to get goosebumps but ours just did. This confidence you can hear in the sound and the lyrics that completely contrast the first half of the song leaves you spellbound.
