Everyone has a moment or memory where their life changes, and for Laufey, that was the Bewitched album. The Bewitched era gave us Lauvers a sold-out tour, worldwide recognition for Laufey, and her first GRAMMY. We predict this will be the first of many for the enchanting Icelandic-Chinese artist. In fact, the Bewitched album was so influential in the modern music space that it was named the biggest jazz debut album in history on Spotify. Thankfully, the momentum refuses to stop. The announcement of The Goddess Tour came with an extended edition of Bewitched, which features four new songs that truly take the word timeless to a whole new level. We’ve already gushed about the lead single ‘Goddess,’ so buckle up as we break down the new songs on Bewitched: The Goddess Edition following its recent release.
‘Bored’
Dear Laufey, we would never be ‘Bored’ of you and your brilliant music. This track is a soulful confession that has us both pining for freedom yet searching for love. The lyrics follow Laufey singing directly to a lover where a connection has ended. She explores feelings of boredom and frustration in such a vivid way that allows us to visualize the entire story. It’s brutally honest on such a romantic melody. And honestly, we absolutely love it.
‘Trouble’
Trouble has some of our favorite lyrics; the storytelling is impossible not to love. Laufey is known for pairing her classical sound with modern lyrics, and this song perfectly sums up her unique sound. The melody is the type of classical jazz you’d expect to hear in an overly elaborate romantic scene in an old Hollywood movie. In the lyrics, Laufey tries to navigate life post-breakup, singing: “Trouble with my mama, asking how I am, how can I tell her I’m crying ’bout a man?” Seriously, what’s not to love about that?
‘It Could Happen To You’
Everything happens when you least expect it, right? Well, Laufey has a new song about that. In ‘It Could Happen To You,’ Laufey playfully explores experiencing love when it seems unlikely. The upbeat pace of the song shares those feelings of being swept off your feet, and it’s just so much fun to listen to. While a shorter track, and placed just before the gutwrenching end to the album ‘Goddess,’ it’s a treat to our ears. By the way, we’re now romanticizing our life to this song. So, if you see us expecting spring and running when church bells ring, you know why.
We will always be in our Laufey era because of her timeless music. The new tracks featured on Bewitched: The Goddess Edition are truly introducing a new generation to the incredible genre of jazz music. As The Goddess Tour is in full force, we’re excited to hear the live renditions of these tracks.
