It’s no secret we love Young Culture here at The Honey Pop! From their first single, Bloom, in 2017, to their debut album, You Had to Be There, in 2022: we’ve been locked in the whole time! The band is quickly taking over the pop-punk scene and has earned slots on several major tours over the last 7 years. Including a direct support spot with Between You and Me this past spring. Just in case this is the first time you’re hearing about the band: here are the top 5 reasons why they’re some of our favorite pop-punkers, and should be yours too!
Advocate for Diversity in the Scene
One of the most important pieces of Young Culture’s platform is making sure their fanbase is a safe space for marginalized communities. Lead singer, Alex Magnan, comes from a Filipino background and continues to be open about his identity and calling out discrimination in the alternative scene.
Young Culture also works to close the gender gap that prevails in pop punk by uplifting female creatives in the scene. The band ensures that women have a visible and valuable place on their tour packages. Last year, the band toured with Meet Me @ the Altar and Daisy Grenade and has expressed ongoing support for their previous tour-mates.
Authenticity
Since the beginning, the band has prided themselves on staying authentic. Similar to our last point, the boys of YC do not stray from their values. No matter how much attention Young Culture has garnered, Alex continues to bring attention to the marginalization of POC musicians in the scene. Bassist, Gabe Pietrafesa, who has recently gained a sizable TikTok following under the username, “06nissian”, has not changed the way he uses his platform. He continues to speak about his mental health journey and to express himself in the way that makes him feel most comfortable- regardless of any negative backlash.
Fan Interactions
One thing about Young Culture is that they value their relationships with their fans. Whether it be interacting on social media or hanging around in the crowd after a show, they always put energy into making their supporters feel valued. We’ve never had a negative experience with the band no matter how much they grow and are counting down the days until the next YC tour!
Live Performances
One thing about Young Culture is that the band is going to put on one heck of a show. The band loves what they do and it’s very clearly reflected by their stage presence. Every performance is filled with enthusiasm and full of energy! All three members- Alex, Gabe, and Troy, have incredible chemistry and you can feel their love for each other from the crowd. Speaking of the crowd, we’ve never seen a dead crowd with Young Culture. Everyone has fun at a YC show! fans, new and old, are always super into their set and match the energy of the band- which truly makes for the best live experience.
They’re Responsible for the Best Song Ever Written
If you’ve heard ‘Drift’ you’d know exactly what we’re talking about. Okay, we’re exaggerating a little. But honestly, Young Culture has a no-skip discography. Spanning 2 EPs, a full-length album, and several singles, the band is responsible for nothing but bangers. Every song is catchy and will surely get stuck in your head (and on your “On Repeat” playlist)!
