Halloween is one of our favorite holidays at THP, and as much as we love every aspect of the holiday, costumes have to be the tradition we enjoy most. And if you’re with us, we’re guessing you enjoy dressing up for Halloween as much as we do. So, we’re here today with a list of our favorite fictional monsters to inspire your costumes this year.
Dracula
We couldn’t start this list with any other monster other than Dracula. Probably the most notorious vampire ever created, Count Dracula has been depicted over and over since Bram Stoker’s novel until the present, and we always love to see different interpretations of this character (and costume.)
Slicked-back hair, a black cape, fangs, and some fake blood on your face, and you’ll be the best-dressed vampire at any Halloween party. And if you need some makeup inspiration, take a look at Béla Lugosi as the famous bloodsucker in the 1931 film Dracula:

Werewolf
Switching over to vampires’ most well-known rivals, no costume list would be complete without mentioning werewolves. These fascinating creatures have been a part of our folklore for centuries, making us just a little scared of being outside during a full moon for just as long.
You could take inspiration from various werewolves in fiction for this costume. Some examples would be Jacob Black from Twilight, Wayne from Hotel Transylvania, and Clawdeen Wolf from Monster High. In any case, the secret to the perfect werewolf costume is the makeup and the fangs to give you that wolf-like look.

Frankenstein’s Monster
Another classic monster that just had to be here is Frankenstein’s Monster. Created by Mary Shelley in 1818, this guy has also had multiple versions depicted in media, and we love (and take inspiration from) all of them.
You can put your costume together by adding the little screws on each side of your neck and wearing some green face paint. You could even make this a couple’s costume if your partner feels like dressing up like Frankenstein’s bride with the white streaks in their hair and a white dress.

Zombie
Be it The Walking Dead or The Last of Us, zombies are the perfect costume for any makeup lover who wants to try something different on Halloween this year.
We say that because in order to achieve the slightly decaying appearance of zombies, a lot of makeup is involved. We may not be the most talented makeup artists out there, but we know some of you are and will definitely be excited about the idea of recreating this look.

Ghost
Ghosts are such a fun costume to work with! We know you may not believe that right now because ghosts aren’t always the most complex costumes, but that’s the fun part: you get to put your own spin on the costume.
You can take inspiration from various sources, create something inspired by your favorite spectral character from a movie or TV show… or just wear a white sheet if you need a quick and easy last-minute costume.

Witch
Look, we know witches technically aren’t monsters, but we also know how much we love witch costumes for Halloween, especially because of how versatile they can be. Just think how Sabrina Spellman and the Sanderson Sisters are all witches.
You could go the simple route, with a pointy hat and a cape, or go all out and do make-up, wear a witchy dress, and carry a wand around all night. But no matter what you do, witches will always be iconic.

Dragon
We could never forget dragons on this list, especially knowing how much we love movies like How To Train Your Dragon. Speaking of which, Toothless is absolutely the dragon we had in mind when we put this list together.
Just think: a black outfit, a pair of wings, and maybe some contact lenses to give you a similar eye color to a Night Fury dragon? You’ll be drawing all the attention at any party!

Mermaid
The first sea creatures we mention in this article, mermaids, aren’t your typical monsters in the end, and they don’t look the part at all. Mermaids are usually depicted as beautiful women who happen to have fishtails instead of legs. But of course, that’s not all. Mermaids are also known for causing ships to wreck and even the most experienced sailors to drown.
Mermaids can be a little bit tricky as a costume because of the tail, but you can always wear a skirt or a pair of wide-legged pants along with sea-inspired accessories and makeup. We personally love the idea of using multiple bracelets to show how mermaids cherish their treasures.

Mummy
Mummies are such interesting monsters to dress up for Halloween, and the costume is also relatively easy!
We’d recommend using some bandages on top of an all-white outfit to make your experience easier and keep with the original idea of the costume. Makeup-wise, drawing dark circles under your eyes to show you’re a mummy who has just woken up is a must!

Sea Monster
Be it the creature from The Shape of Water, the Loch Ness monster, or even those illustrations from centuries ago, water-bound beings are always a fun inspiration for Halloween costumes.
You can use green and blue makeup to draw scales on your face and wear some sea-themed accessories in order to make yourself look more like you crawled out of the ocean and straight into a Halloween party.

So, what did you think of our costume inspirations? Tell us about what you’ll be for Halloween this year on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook; we always love hearing from you.
