Hey, honey! This article contains massive spoilers for the movie 1 Million Followers, so if you’ve yet to dip into the luxurious world of FAYME, we ask you to check Fandango and Atom Tickets to see if your local theater is one of the limited viewings or watch it on digital. Then, return here to dive into our chat with its leading star, Shelley Q.
Taste, lifestyle, pump, or skin—we bet you’ve already conjured up five iconic accounts for each. Whether it’s sampling the decadence of food until its edible colors bloom like a painter’s palette or savoring the ocean’s salty breeze as you envision an influencer embarking on your dream cruise, these subcategories are more than just fodder to satisfy the cravings of your social media doom scrolling. They’re also a part of 1 Million Followers, a daringly verified thriller destined to be a viral hit. Because who doesn’t want to be a part of the glitz and glamour? Starring actress Shelley Q, just freshly whisked from her own ocean paradise in Western Australia, plays Karissa, a fresh-eyed horse girl who falls down the internet rabbit hole to save her family’s farm and father’s health.
We love this film, so our theorizing wheels started turning when we chatted with her. From high-heel metaphors to a splash of The 100 fun, we can’t wait for you to adore it and her as much as we do!
Perth To Influencer Island
Hi Shelley, welcome to the hive! We couldn’t help but notice the uncanny parallels between your 1 Million Followers character, Karissa, and yourself. Just like she swaps the horse stables for a luxury influencer trip, you left your own farm in Western Australia for Hollywood. Did you ever think, “Wait a minute, am I playing Karissa, or is Karissa playing me?” during those moments of shifting between two different worlds?
I really had empathy for Karissa because her journey felt so close to my own. As I stepped into her shoes, I found myself not just learning about her but retracing my own steps, my own journey. It was emotional because I started to realize how much of my life mirrored hers, and that reflection made the character even more personal. It wasn’t just about acting her part; it was about reconnecting with parts of myself I hadn’t thought about in a long time. That process was full of emotion and depth, and I think it made my portrayal of her feel real.
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the film’s themes, there’s a poignant scene where Karissa and Myami (Pose’s Ryan Jamaal Swain) discuss their “whys” concerning becoming influencers. How often they’re roped into this world not for the glamour it presents but because of an unfortunate background. Can you share with us your “whys” for picking up this career that can be full of high and low moments?
This question hits home for me. My “why” is tied to my upbringing. Growing up, I had these major dreams of being in the biggest city possible and pursuing my art. But as a little girl, I didn’t always feel like the people around me could see that vision as clearly as I did. I felt like there were limits placed on what I could achieve and that I wasn’t taken seriously. That just made me want to push harder to prove I could live out my passion. Breaking free from those limitations and the status quo was a huge driving force for me!
Karissa’s Naviety
The script caters to Karissa’s discomfort in this provocative world that she’s in through her clothing items, particularly her shoes! Sometimes, she’s stated they’re uncomfortable, slipping them off and even getting a foot rub from Jack, which could be even more symbolic of her seeing him as an emotional rock. Towards the film’s end, Myami teasingly texts, “With better shoes.” How do you think this plot device helped give us a snapshot into her headspace?
The shoe reference really stands out as a symbol of Karissa’s discomfort and growth throughout the film. She’s constantly navigating this influencer world that doesn’t feel like her own, and the shoes represent that discomfort. By the end, when she’s able to take them off, it’s almost like a shedding of all the expectations she’s been carrying, the ones that were never truly hers to begin with. The “better shoes” Myami mentions are more about Karissa finally finding her place and feeling grounded in her own skin. It’s a beautiful metaphor for her journey, coming into her own on her terms.
Her innocence is also displayed in her mannerisms, such as saying grace before having dinner, whereas the other influencers immediately take out their phones for that delectable snap. When you think of the before and after Karissa when exposed to the environment, which particular action portrays that 180?
Karissa is definitely reserved, but when she sees others getting ahead by exposing parts of themselves that she wouldn’t naturally share, she starts to wonder if that’s the path she should take too. Her driving force is to help her family, so she’s observing and trying to work out how the world operates. She starts thinking that maybe if she goes against her gut feeling and sacrifices a part of herself, she might be able to get ahead materially and finally help those in her life. That’s where her real conflict lies: figuring out if this is what she needs to do to succeed.

Intimate Relationship Dynamics
Obviously, by touching on Karissa and Jack, we see that they’re the central love story in the middle of this chaotically dark narrative. One of our favorite scenes is after they’ve had their first kiss, and his mask slips a little. Is there a moment between them that stands out to you?
When Karissa first opens her heart to Jack when they have the first kiss, she really searches his eyes and feels his presence. She’s seeking a home outside of herself. She’s looking for a sense of trust, wanting to lean on Jack as a rock. But as Jack reveals some dark secrets and explains more of what’s happening to Karissa, that’s when she grows up really fast. She learns that you can’t trust everyone, and as soon as she realizes she’s been lied to, that’s the major turn for Karissa. She’s not a little baby anymore, and she realizes that she has to count on herself in the end. So that’s when she grew up.
We’ve got a giant “spoilers” sign here! But to hone in on those more mature themes, we’re inevitably keyed in that what they thought was a sponsored trip is a sex ring. It gets a strong reaction from viewers upon seeing these wide-eyed influencers stripped down in boxers and then bidding on. If we were to move it into real-life terms, its symbolism could speak to how artists often have little autonomy over their bodies and lives, whether as simple as a tabloid or something more tricky as AI. How do you personally navigate this landscape and ensure you’re always in the driver’s seat?
This is a great question, and it reminds me of something I’ve learned throughout my own journey: you have to stay true to yourself. It’s so easy to get caught up in trying to follow other people’s paths or doing things to please others, but that never leads to fulfillment. What keeps me grounded is following what feels right for me, not what looks good to others. If you’re not coming from a place of authenticity and self-awareness, it’s hard to sustain anything, whether it’s a career, a personal journey, or even just an idea. Staying aligned with your own truth is what helps you stay the course.
We’ve been obsessed with The 100 forever, and Henry Ian Cusick, who plays the film’s primary villain, Daniel, steals the scene at various points. There’s a particularly uneasy scene when he wins Karissa in the auction, turning her into a recreation of his Fiona. What was it like to film these confronting scenes with him?
This was one of the most vulnerable experiences I’ve had as an actor. It wasn’t just about delivering lines or playing a character; I had to expose myself on a much deeper level, both physically and emotionally. There’s a fine line between acting and being personally affected by the scenes, especially when it involves intense physicality or crossing personal boundaries. This was new territory for me, and it was challenging. I had to navigate personal insecurities about my body and how I felt being in those moments. But it also reminded me how wide the spectrum of acting is. It can pull everything out of you, and in that way, it’s incredibly rewarding. The preparation and process give you the freedom to be in the moment without letting it spill into your personal life. It’s an incredible balance, and that’s the part of acting I love; it pushes you but also allows you to grow in ways you didn’t expect.
There’s also a really cunning dynamic between Karissa and Fiona where, at first, we think it’s two girls fighting over a boy, but it turns into so much more! We see protection over each other upon the influencer villa getting broken into. It’s then picked up again at the end with the cliffhanger phone call. What do you think is under the surface between them? Are there any headcanons that you and Jade Ma cooked up?
The tension between Karissa and Fiona goes much deeper than just fighting over a boy. It’s about trust, survival, and figuring out who they really are in the middle of everything that’s happening. They’re both dealing with their own issues and insecurities and when the break-in happens, it forces them to drop the rivalry and focus on something bigger. At that point, it’s no longer about competing. It’s about finding out who they can trust in a world full of lies and half-truths. It’s almost like they’re stuck in a web of deception, and one lie just keeps leading to another, making everything feel more complicated. That’s what really drives the dynamic between them.

Going Back To Homegrown Roots
One million is the golden number in the film. Is there an account you catch yourself lurking on throughout the day that deserves to hit that milestone? Which category is it in—taste, lifestyle, pump, or skin?
There are accounts like this, and for me, these are my inner circle, the people in my life who inspire me and fuel my creativity every day. These are the people who, to me, deserve the millions, the ones who are worth millions in my heart. These connections go beyond any online platform. They’re the people I have real conversations with, the ones I sit down to dinner with, and who are there when I’m away from the noise of the internet. They’re the ones who truly deserve to be celebrated and cherished.
Finally, Karissa mentions the ocean views throughout the film. Having lived in Western Australia, what’s your comfort beach there that makes you feel like you’re home?
I grew up on a farm, about three hours away from any beach, so when I spent time at Cottesloe Beach in Perth, it felt like a whole new world. I have so many great memories of watching the sunset at places like the Ocean Beach Hotel and the Cottesloe Beach Club. The colors in the sky were so saturated: red, orange, pink, and yellow. I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else. It was like a gift that only that special part of Perth had. I’m still in awe of it every time I think about those sunsets.
