Confession time. We did in fact hear The Hart in its entirety at Grayscale’s early album release show back in December in Philadelphia. Phew okay, now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about The Hart.
Now, we tend to say everything Grayscale does is the best thing they’ve ever done (and we’re right.) But The Hart truly feels like an example of Grayscale at their best. The raw vulnerability that went into this album is palpable in everything from the production to the lyricism. The band has talked about the experiences and emotions that went into creating this album and what it means to them over the last couple of months and you can really feel it all come together when listening to The Hart. The first listen we got of some of these songs absolutely knocked us off our feet and brought us to tears and we have to commend Grayscale for the vulnerability. We can’t imagine that it was easy to share these experiences and all we can hope for is that we do this album justice while talking about it.
At THP, we firmly believe in listening to albums for the first time from front to back, as the artist intended. But you already know how much we love the singles from The Hart, including: ‘Mum II,’ ‘Summer Clothes,‘ Don’t Leave Me In The Dark,’ and more. So let’s take this time to focus on the new tracks!
‘Through The Landslide’
We were excited for The Hart as a whole, but this is the song we’ve been waiting for, ever since they teased it last year. Honestly, we’re glad that they saved it for the album release. It’s one of our top favorites from the album and was worth the wait.
‘Talking In My Sleep’
We’re gonna be real. We cried when we heard it live for the first time. It’s such a raw and vulnerable track. Putting it directly after ‘Through The Landslide’ was emotional whiplash. But doing so highlights Grayscale’s depth and versatility as a band. We all know that they’ve released sad songs both throughout the years and recently. But this one, as well as the others from their new era hit especially hard. ‘Talking In My Sleep’ brings the vulnerability of this album to new heights and it tugs at you emotionally in a way that only Grayscale can. It’s definitely one of the standout tracks on The Hart.
‘Some Kind Of Magic’
Grayscale must’ve put ‘some kind of magic’ in this song because we’re absolutely obsessed. It’s so catchy, upbeat, and Collin’s vocals shine with this track. We’re hoping this one becomes a setlist staple because it’s a banger.
‘Dance With Your Ghost’
If you don’t dance to this song, we don’t know if we trust you. But for real, we love it. Did we know what to expect from it when hearing it live for the first time? No, but we can’t get enough of it and wouldn’t mind this one finding a home on a future setlist either.
‘Painting Over You’
And finally, the last unreleased song, ‘Painting Over You.’ The imagery and lyrics are unmatched. “I’ll start again with someone new. Tape up my heart and stitch the wound. It’s all that I can do, ’cause I’m painting over you.” Grayscale’s lyricism is always on point and this song, and this album as a whole, are a continuing example of that.
‘Not Afraid To Die (Album Version)’
Okay, you already know how much we love ‘Not Afraid To Die.’ We love it enough to not be afraid to crowdsurf over concrete at 8123 Fest. But Grayscale truly saved the best for last. We didn’t know that it was possible to love this song any more than before, but we do. We won’t go too much into detail about this one, but trust us when we say that you have to listen to this version.
So, that’s the short version of how much we love Grayscale’s new album, The Hart. Be sure to get tickets to see them on tour this spring! What are your favorite songs from Grayscale’s new album, The Hart? Let us know in the comments, on Facebook, Instagram, or by tweeting us @thehoneypop!
