Yves has proven time and time again that she’s an artist everyone should keep their eye on. Ever since she returned to the scene with her solo music, she has established a unique, experimental sound that transcends all boundaries. Every single mini-album has been mindblowing and has left its mark in different ways, but we can without a doubt say that NAIL is Yves’ best to date, and here’s why.
Track By Track
‘It’
‘It’ is the first track on NAIL, and it’s enough to set the atmosphere and separate this release from her previous mini-albums. This song alone already explores musicality and sound in a way no other Yves song does. Right from the beginning, the landscape Yves paints for us is different: nostalgia, yearning. The instrumental is a standout, with its use of strings, and it might be her most lyrically interesting song yet. With just one song, we knew NAIL would give us Yves’ most interesting, intricate release to date.
‘HALO’
While ‘It’ sets the scene, ‘HALO’ takes us on another ride with an almost entirely instrumental club banger that finishes setting the other side of the atmosphere for our scene and our music. Yves is no stranger to exploring sounds beyond her voice; the instrumental alone in ‘HALO’ is enough to make it a standout, but the addition of Yves‘ unique tone makes it even more special.
‘NAIL’
‘NAIL’ is right at the middle of the mini-album, and it’s without a doubt the star of the show. The power and confidence this track emanates are addictive. With a feature from Lolo Zouaï, Yves explores a more hip-hop sound, all while incorporating her own, and it leads to perfection. The surprising chorus draws you right into the song’s self-celebration and empowering emotions. The song translates beautifully into its music video and gives us probably Yves’ best solo choreography yet.
‘Break It’
‘Break It’ has to be in the top Yves songs ever. The picture it paints is simple yet beautiful: washing away all struggles, moving on, and forgetting about the world. It shows the other side of the confidence in ‘NAIL,’ a side that is more wounded and bittersweet, that shows not everything is perfect. But the beauty of the song is that ‘Break It’ is also full of strength and resilience, and it’s all tied together with luring, addictive melodies. This beautiful song proves, yet again, that Yves brings something new and necessary to the scene, and Lexie Liu on the track is simply genius.
‘Birth’
To wrap up this unique mini-album, ‘Birth’ sums up everything NAIL is about sonically: an incredible instrumental, a nostalgic yet beautiful atmosphere, and the power of Yves‘ voice as she creates a world all by herself. But ‘Birth’ also encapsulates the feelings behind the mini-album, from pain to hope and light. It is the final showcase of Yves’ incredible artistic vision, as well as the final reason everyone should know Yves as one of the most promising artists right now.
