Summer’s just around the corner, and we’ve prepared the ultimate reading list for you with the newest book releases. If you’ve been looking for an adult rom-com with hilarious banter, we can’t recommend Violet Lumani’s Not Good Neighbors enough!
Not Good Neighbors follows Penelope “Penny” Huff, who’s had enough of her next-door neighbor. The wall separating their apartments are paper thin, and Jack Craig seems to do everything he can to push her buttons. But an attempt to soundproof their wall goes wrong when Penny hammers a hole into it.
Penny and Jack are seeing (and hearing) much more of each other as they get stuck demolishing and rebuilding the wall between their apartments. We don’t know about you, but that sounds like a recipe for romance to us! Here are three reasons why you should read Not Good Neighbors by Violet Lumani.

Book Overview: Not Good Neighbors
Content warnings: parental narcissism, gaslighting, manipulation, drinking, strong language, financial stress, mentions of parental abandonment, cheating, and divorce
Summary: Thanks to a tragically thin wall in their NYC apartment building, Penny knows far too much about Jack—like his taste in too-loud music, the noxious fumes from his kitchen, and his habit of suspiciously aggressive vacuuming. And she knows all about the tearful brunette fleeing his apartment the day he moved in—the one crying about her cheating ex. Not even Jack’s piratical charm can undo what Penny knows: the man is bad news.
When her attempt to get the wall soundproofed literally blows a hole in it, the two are forced into a DIY disaster that traps them in each other’s lives…and spaces. With eviction looming, prank wars escalating, and unexpected sparks flying, Penny starts to suspect her insufferable neighbor might just be the plot twist her love life needs.
Escalating Prank Wars
Not Good Neighbors starts out with Penny and Jack constantly complaining about each other’s noise levels. They constantly try to one-up each other until they bring in their building’s superintendent to the fray. Once the hole between their apartments gets bigger, Penny and Jack resort to pranks that quickly get out of hand. From bird poop and canned tuna to heaps of glitter, there is no such thing as too petty with them. Penny’s best friend and partner-in-crime Margie even gets involved more than once, escalating the situation further.
Not-So-Forced Proximity
Another reason why you should read Not Good Neighbors is the forced proximity between Penny and Jack. (Not that either of them really mind it anyway.) Their attraction to each other is evident even before Penny puts a hole in the wall. The obvious innuendos and increased banter really ramp up the tension between our two main characters. But in tearing down and rebuilding the wall, Penny and Jack get to know each other even more. Maybe even start to get along…
Penny’s Friends
There’s just something about supporting characters in a rom-com! And in Not Good Neighbors, we were just as invested in Penny’s friend group as we were in Penny and Jack’s romance. Margie is a rising actress and a true ride-or-die for Penny, no questions asked. Then there’s Avery, their rock and mother hen. He’s the voice of reason and the responsible one in the group. Everyone in the trio finds romance, love, and maybe also some heartbreak in this book. (That’s life, though.) And we absolutely love their friendship dynamics!
With laugh-out-loud scenes, an unbreakable friendship trio, and not-so-forced proximity, Violet Lumani’s Not Good Neighbors is the adult summer rom-com you’ve been missing!
