7 Maren Morris Songs Your Playlist Needs Right Now

With her progressive and eclectic style, Maren Morris has become the voice of a generation. Her incredible songwriting skills and distinctive voice quickly earned her a reputation as a well-rounded musician after she debuted as a songwriter. Maren writes both vulnerable ballads and powerful, empowering anthems, which make her music unique. Her songs are adept at tapping into universal emotions and human experiences through lyricism. As a result, she has become one of the most recognizable female voices in modern music.

With the release of her debut single, Maren has undeniably emerged as a leading force in the country music industry, carving out a niche for herself unlike any other. She is poised to become a superstar in both the country realm and across genre boundaries due to the intricate lyrics, dynamic voice, and imagery. As a result of her ability to transcend genres and incredibly diverse musical abilities, she has established herself as a mainstay at all-genre festivals worldwide.

With her chart-topping, breakthrough project Hero, Morris has amassed numerous hit singles, millions of combined streams, and several award nominations. Maren Morris completely shook the music industry in 2016 when she delivered a lush, powerful, creative, and ambitious album. Her third studio album is approaching completion, and Maren has described it as relatively joyful and inspiring. Having not been off the road in years, she’s savoring the experience of crafting her forthcoming album instead of rushing through it. The new album will be different from her previous works, incorporating more of the ‘Texas rootsy style’ she grew up hearing.

Clearly, the sky’s the limit for our favorite girl, but in the meantime, here are our top 7 picks that should be on your playlist!

‘My Church’

“When this wonderful world gets heavy and I need to find my escape,
I just keep the wheels rollin’, radio scrollin’ ‘til my sins wash away…”

Maren Morris earned her first Grammy nomination with ‘My Church,’ a song inspired by a breakup that helped her gain recognition and become a household name. It is fascinating how a song can resonate so deeply with you and make you instantly fall in love with it as soon as you first hear it? And if you listen to ‘My Church,’ you will feel the same way. The chorus bursts out with “Can I get a Hallelujah? Can I get an Amen?” accompanied by harmonies that will make you feel like you are a part of the actual church choir. We realized this song was going to be a hit single the moment we pressed the play button. While Morris made the first impression through her imperfections, she made a striking introduction with her confident and positive attitude that led her to the success she is savoring today!

“I find my soul revival
Singing every single verse
Yeah, I guess that’s my church…”

’80s Mercedes’

“Still runs good, built to last
Moves like a hula girl on the dash
She ain’t made for practicality
Yeah, I guess she’s just like me…”

Wow, wow, wow…someone is becoming louder. Maren, you sounded right with everything you sang here. With this unique love song about her (and our) dream car, you will be ready to hit the road and drive down the highways. Listening to this song while driving with flowy hair on a warm summer day, blaring it with speakers, and screaming the lyrics make it a perfect summer song. Even if you don’t have a vintage car in your driveway right now, we sense your love for them. It’s hard to deny that a classic convertible is something everyone wants! The song is very imagery-rich, as Morris makes fans feel like they’re riding shotgun with her on the nostalgic journey, which is the mark of a true songwriter.

‘I Could Use A Love Song’

“Usually a drink will do the trick
Take the edge off quick, sitting in the dark, with a shared cigarette
Seeing eye-to-eye, and heart-to-heart, but maybe I’m just getting old
Used to work but now it don’t
…”

‘I Could Use a Love Song’ is a poignant ballad sung packed with vulnerability. In a way, it engages in a quiet dialogue about feeling the pain of heartbreak, which has a universal appeal. Maren chronicles a relatable story and explores the feeling of losing love and sadness after the romance has faded. It’s hard not to admit that we have all experienced that feeling that hits you out of nowhere. We try the quick fixes while feeling sad for ourselves, but nothing seems to be working. At the moment, an album or a song brings us comfort that speaks to us and gives us hope that all isn’t lost.

This song is about hope and remaining optimistic even when you’ve had unpleasant experiences. Maren isn’t afraid to be completely honest with her lyrics. It’s as if she doesn’t embellish what she says, just tells us right away what we’re thinking at the time. As a whole, it is an honest song that goes beyond butterflies and roses to fill your head with all kinds of dreams.

“I could use a love song,
That takes me back, just like that, when it comes on,
To a time when I wouldn’t roll my eyes, at a guy and a girl
Who make it work in a world, that for me so far just seems to go so wrong
Yeah I could use, I could use a love song…”

‘Seeing Blind’

“Oh, my, my
You just took me by surprise
And I can’t believe my eyes
Oh, I must be seeing blind…”

Our list would not be complete without an honorable mention of this stunning country-pop crossover smash, ‘Seeing Blind.’ Performing together for the first time, Maren Morris, country music extraordinaire, and Niall Horan, global pop sensation (who also owns this writer’s heart), lent their talents to produce an outstanding collaboration that featured on Niall’s debut solo album Flicker. The song has a uniquely charming atmosphere as it slowly articulates its lyrics and creates a rhythmic melody with country choruses woven into the background. It was a surprising twist to Flicker that delivered an eclectic mix of radio-ready pop, folk, and retro-rock. It is the perfect country song, as Morris’ voice blends seamlessly with Horan’s. We would love to see this duo collaborating in the future again!

‘Line By Line’

Line By Line‘ marks an exceptional collaboration between JP Saxe and Maren Morris that can only be described as a love song about songwriting, inspired by passion and dedication. It grew out of an innovative approach to songwriting by two of the top songwriters in today’s music industry who understand their strengths. They know they are most vulnerable and authentic when they are expressing their innermost feelings. The song is delightfully intoxicating as indie-pop combines with modern country sound seamlessly woven together with soaring choruses.

I have always loved being contemplative of the artist vs. muse relationship in songs. ‘Line by Line’ acts as a promise that I’ll never be done writing about my muse in this life because he can’t be summed up in one song. Writing that day with JP was the most fluid, inspiring session. He’s a lyrical faucet. He threw out the line ‘immortalizing my sincerity’ and it blew my mind. I think, all in all, we wrote the whole song in an hour and immediately recorded it.

‘Chasing After You’

“You come over when your wine’s all gone
Always catch me when I’m not that strong
Then you wind up staying all night long
Ain’t nothin’ new…”

With the smoldering duet ‘Chasing After You,’ Maren Morris and her dearly beloved husband Ryan Hurd joined forces for the first time. They’ve written together and sung on each other’s recordings in the past, but this is the first time they’ve performed a sensual duet together that fuses sultry pop with a modern-day country sound. This song chronicles a story of two people who don’t mind a little chase as they continue to be in a relationship that goes on and off. The chorus features a mix of lush pop and rock drumming, delivering an exquisite production.

It feels like the timing is really perfect and it’s a full circle moment to get to make music together in this way.

Maren Morris

You come back to the love you were running from
Don’t know why, don’t know why I let you, but I do
Guess I love chasing after you
…”

‘The Middle’

“Oh baby, why don’t you just meet me in the middle?
I’m losing my mind just a little
So why don’t you just meet me in the middle?
In the middle…”

Have you ever thought that country music and dance music would go well together? It never occurred to us that genres on opposite ends of the spectrum could merge seamlessly. Maren Morris wowed us when we heard her on German producer Zedd’s fun dance record ‘The Middle.’ She amplified this chugging electro-pop stomper from 2018 to a successful degree. The background is anything but country, as both Zedd and Grey stay firmly planted in the electronic dance genre. Overall, it turned out to be a fabulous success, as the song was nominated for three GRAMMY awards in 2018 and was a smash hit on several charts. We particularly like the chorus of the song, which is well-produced, well-sung, and very catchy.
