Honey Bees and Pia Mia fans, Pia Mia is BACK!
No, we’re not kidding. After being part of the music world since 2011 and taking a hiatus for a few years, the pop singer has officially returned. She released her debut album, Anti Romantica on September 13, 2024. We’re excited that she’s back and couldn’t resist discussing it. She’s come along between the release of her debut single ‘Bubblegum Boy’ and her debut album. If there’s one thing we can say about the album before diving into it, Pia Mia owns her truth on Anti Romantica, and we can’t be more proud of it.

‘Repeat After Me’
“‘I’m not gonna answer the phone
‘I’m just gonna leave it alone’
Promise not to love him again
Promise not to love him again
Repeat after me“
Pia Mia starts her album off strong with the first single off the album, ‘Repeat After Me.’ It’s the album’s first track and served as the first single she has released in three years! The song explores themes of self-control, healing, and empowerment. The dreamy song finds Pia telling someone to move on and get over the guy they were once with. We don’t know if it’s a best friend or her talking to herself, but either way, it goes, the song is relatable and catchy. The song has several mantras from the chorus and even parts of the verses.
Some of us have that one ex or someone we were talking to, whether from years ago or recently, that we want and need to get over. This song is the ideal choice for such situations. While Pia Mia is standing on business and coming from an honest place to whoever she’s singing to, she finds time to come off as playful, making the track have multiple layers. The vibes for ‘Repeat After Me’ are there from start to finish. Pia Mia didn’t disappoint.
A playlist about mantras, breakups, or late-night vibes would suit this song well.
‘Nice and Slow’
“I need more respectfully
Do you got it like that, got it like that, got it like that?”
The second track off the album is ‘Nice and Slow.’ However, the song is anything but. The song explores themes of romance, intimacy, and assertiveness. While the song might be called ‘Nice and Slow,’ the song has an upbeat, energetic, and playful vibe. The song is about Pia Mia knowing what she wants in a relationship and intimacy. She isn’t settling for less than she deserves and doesn’t want to rush into things too quickly. We love how she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to speak or sing.
A playlist about romance, desire, or would suit this song well.
‘Sugar’
“Give me something sweet, give me that sugar on my tongue (On my tongue)
Once I get a taste, you know I just can’t get enough (Get enough)“
We all know that sugar, the substance, is addictive. We can say the same thing about the track ‘Sugar.’ The song explores themes of desire, physical connection, and flirtation. The song has an upbeat and playful vibe that matches what the song is about in every way. The singer finds herself wanting and craving her significant other physically. She wants sugar from him, which, if you’re from the south of the United States or know someone who is, sugar is what Southerners like to call kisses. She can’t get enough of her partner’s kisses, or should we say sugar, and all we have to say is that it be like that.
A playlist about playful love, candy-coded songs, or temptation would suit this song well.
‘You Win’
“Did you break my heart?
Or did I break my own?
I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know“
The fourth track on Pia Mia’s Anti Romantica is ‘You Win.’ Have you ever been with someone who made you question everything after the breakup? If so, this song captures that feeling. The song explores themes of heartbreak, doubt, and isolation. Her ex broke her heart, and instead of going out and having fun with her friends or getting revenge, she reflects on what happened and wants to be alone with her thoughts and feelings. In the end, and at the end of the day, she feels he’s won while she’s out here losing. We don’t think it’ll last long. We hope not, at least!
A playlist about breakups, resentment, or vulnerability would suit this song well.
‘Wish You Well’ featuring Marc E. Bassy
“So baby I know
When we said our goodbyes
That this couldn’t be through
It was still worth the try”
The next song on the album is ‘Wish You Well,’ featuring singer Marc E. Bassy. The song explores themes of regret, longing, and hope. Sometimes, people have an ex whom they want to move on from but don’t fully want to move on. Pia Mia does a great job at painting that picture in ‘Wish You Well’ with the help of Marc E. Bassy. She finds herself realizing that while she and her ex went their separate ways, she didn’t speak about how she really felt about her ex and wishes they could’ve worked it out.
A playlist about lingering feelings, second chances, and hopeful love would suit this song well.
‘Owe Me’
“Now you gotta watch me dance
You don’t get a second chance
No no, baby, I’m not sorry”
Many of us have that one ex or a few exes who either put us through a lot or wasted our time. Some might’ve dealt with both. Regardless of things, sometimes one might ask or tell the person who hurt them that they want their time wasted back. ‘Owe Me’ is that song where Pia Mia’s asking for exactly that on her album. The song explores themes of regret, betrayal, and empowerment. The song is about the singer reclaiming and getting back everything her ex took away from her while they were in a relationship. She feels like the person owes her for it all. She might be moving on, but she’s also right.
A playlist about being unapologetic after a breakup, healing, or empowering breakup songs would suit this song well.
‘All For You (Interlude)’
‘All For You (Interlude)’ is the shortest track on the album, lasting a duration of 1:50. “There’s no-nobody else I want around,“ Pia Mia sings. She wants her partner to know she’s all for them, about them, and no one else compares to them. It’s a mood when getting into a relationship with someone is worth it.
‘Hurt Forever’
“One of us is gonna hurt forever
Feel the heartbreak now more than ever
Never move on and find anyone better
And it won’t be me, and it won’t be me“
No one wants to hurt forever, but who says you can’t be okay with someone else hurting forever after a breakup? ‘Hurt Forever’ is that song you play for your exes who think they can try to get back with you even after you’ve let it be known you’re so over it and them. It’s an upbeat song with bittersweet undertones. The song explores themes of moving on, self-worth, and heartbreak. In the song, Pia Mia is moving on from her past, but her ex is doing anything but. She wishes him nothing but the worst. We can’t say that we blame her.
The singer knows what she wants and what she doesn’t want. What she doesn’t is someone who either cheated on her or was flat-out wrong for her in every way. She knows her worth, and she lets the guy she’s singing to know that no one is better than her. She’s firm about what she’s singing while being playful at the same time. We hope whoever hurt her in the past is punching the air because they lost a good one.
A playlist about moving on, thriving after a breakup, or being unapologetic would suit this song well.
‘Make Me Smile’
“Ooh, I got expensive habits
And I get it on my own (My own)
I won’t cry if we get tragic“
Who doesn’t want someone who can make them smile? Pia Mia does, and she lets it be known on ‘Make Me Smile.’ The song explores themes of having high standards for love, independence, and confidence. On this track, she’s letting somebody know she has expensive taste and wants only the best. It might seem like she’s materialistic, but she’s anything but. Yes, money makes her smile, but it’s not about that. It’s about how she wants the person to be able to show up and give her the same satisfaction the way money does.
A playlist about self-worth, leveling up, or having main character energy would suit this song well.
‘Easiest Goodbye’
“Say ya love me, but ya love bad back like
Ooh, whoa, you a dog, put a muzzle on it”
There are times when it can be hard to say goodbye to someone. There are also times when it’s not hard in the slightest. ‘Easiest Goodbye’ explores the themes of betrayal, resentment, and vulnerability. The ballad has Pia Mia realizing that while she might have thought she still cared about her ex, the reality is that she doesn’t. She’s over the way he treated her and is ready to move on to better things. It’s a great feeling when it’s easy to say goodbye to someone who hurt you. Her realization is a big deal for her.
A playlist about moving on, goodbyes, or resilience would suit this song well.
‘Lover’
“I chose a lover, it’s true
It’s always a risk when you do
I chose a lover, he’s you
You better be choosing me too“
If you were to ask us our favorite song on Pia Mia’s album, this would be one of our top three. That is if we had to choose. Please don’t make us choose, though. The song explores the uncertainty in love, taking risks, and commitment. ‘Lover’ is a song you slow dance to with someone you feel all the vibes with. The song is all about feeling a deep connection with someone and wanting them despite knowing what could potentially happen when you do. Many of us would love to choose a lover that’s worth it in all the ways.
‘Lover’ is a beautiful masterpiece that reminds us that there’s someone out there for us, whether we’ve met them or not. While everyone might not be worth it, the right person will eventually come along. The song is raw and hypnotic in ways that will have you listening on repeat.
A playlist about romance, late-night moments, or taking risks would suit this song well.
‘Wonder (Outro)’
The last song on Pia Mia’s album is ‘Wonder (Outro)’. It’s one of the songs on the short side with a duration of 1:56. The singer lets someone know they have a special kind of bond as she’s heard repeating, “Nobody, no-no-nobody, gets me like you, gets, gets me like you” throughout the song.
What are your thoughts and feelings on Pia Mia’s Anti Romantica album? Do you have a favorite song or maybe a top three? While her debut album has been a long time coming, we have to admit we would have to say we loved it overall. Our top three are ‘Lover,’ ‘Repeat After Me,’ and ‘Easiest Goodbye.’ If we have one thing to say to the singer, it’s how proud of her we are for releasing a debut album and independently at that.
