How NMIXX’s ‘Soñar (Breaker)’ Connects To ‘O.O’

It’s officially time for an “NMIXX change-up” as we step into the Fe3O4: Break era with ’Soñar (Breaker)!’ NMIXX’s latest pre-release single has us dreaming big and dancing around our rooms, taking inspiration from Latin hip-hop while also adding a bit of dreamy pop and UK garage. It’s already climbing our list of favorite NMIXX songs – Lily, Haewon, Sullyoon, Bae, Jiwoo, and Kyujin have truly outdone themselves!

As we listened to ‘Soñar’ and watched the music video, we couldn’t help but notice some similarities to NMIXX’s debut single, ‘O.O!’ We know our fellow NSWERs love connecting the dots, so we’re breaking down what we observed. Check out ‘Soñar’ below then let’s get into it!

The Writers & Producers

Before we get into the details of these songs, we wanna touch on their creation! Both ‘O.O’ and ’Soñar (Breaker)’ were mostly made by THE HUB, a production group who have credits with most of our favorite K-Pop artists. The two songs have writing credits from Awry, Ayushy, and Brian U of THE HUB, as well as production from Brian U.

Most of the other credits on each song are also members of THE HUB. Check out the full credits for each track below, according to Spotify details!

The Choreography

Some of the first and last bits of the ‘Soñar (Breaker)’ choreography instantly reminded us of ‘O.O!’ The very first formation, where the girls have their arms extended before moving them up, reminded us of the iconic cannon move from the ‘O.O’ intro. And the last part of ‘Soñar,’ when the girls are bending backward, instantly gave us a similar vibe to the famous lift move during Lily’s ‘O.O’ high note.

The Mixxpop Switch-Up

‘Soñar (Breaker)’ is definitely a return to form for Mixxpop – NMIXX’s unique genre that mixes elements of different types of music, often with a distinctly different section. For ‘O.O,’ that different section is the “let me be your superhero” verse, which has a brighter sound than the rest of the song. On ‘Soñar,’ the switch-up comes after the first chorus with an ethereal, twinkling pop sound, led by Haewon and Bae.

The Spanish Language

Whether you loved ‘O.O’ or weren’t sure how you felt about it, there’s a 99% chance you had that “watch out, baila, baila, baila” chorus stuck in your head! Since then, we’ve gotten to see NMIXX’s Spanish skills in action when they performed ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ at an LA pop-up performance, gave a shoutout to Spanish-speaking fans in their Remezcla interview, and sang in special videos for hello82.

’Soñar (Breaker)’ takes NMIXX’s Spanish to the next level by making it the centerpiece of the song with the line “come a soñar,” which means “come to dream.” We think that ties into NMIXX’s lore – more on that in a second!

The Dreamy Lyrics

NMIXX’s group lore centers around the idea of MIXXTOPIA, a place where dreams come true and anything you think of can be real. We first got hints of that idea on ‘O.O’ with lyrics like “realistic dreams, had enough yet?” and it definitely stands out on ‘Soñar (Breaker),’ where the girls sing, “white clouds are my dream car, that blood moon is my hometown.” There’s a sense of fantasy in both songs that we can’t get enough of!

Speaking of fantasy, both tracks mention fantasy characters that NMIXX either do or don’t want to be. ‘O.O’ proclaims, “let me be your superhero,” while ‘Soñar’ sees Jiwoo insisting, “sleeping princess in a fairytale, not me.” Both lyrics show off the girls’ independence and willingness to take on challenges to make their dreams come true and uplift those around them.

Finally, every NSWER remembers their first reaction to seeing the cool pirate ship in the ‘O.O’ music video. While we don’t see it in ‘Soñar,’ it does have the lyric “throw anchor above the sky,” which makes us think that NMIXX might be flying above the visible sky in the ship to get to MIXXTOPIA.

The Music Video & Styling

Even though the settings for these music videos are quite different, with a lot of ’Soñar (Breaker)’ taking place in a desert-like area and ‘O.O’ taking place in a city, they have a similar grunge-esque aesthetic that we love. There are also subtle connections, like Bae’s telescope part calling back to her ‘O.O’ binoculars, and sea creatures like whales popping up in different scenes.

Each song’s respective change-up gets a more colorful section, with ‘O.O’ giving us a cute donut shop with tulle dresses and ‘Soñar’ offering pastel pink, Y2K vibes that make us question why NMIXX haven’t gotten their own Barbies yet. The metallic ground in the pink scenes of ‘Soñar’ even reminds us of the Ad Mare album photoshoot and moving posters!

When ‘Soñar’ goes back to the more Latin-infused section, the gray hooded outfits the girls are wearing instantly send us back to the ‘O.O’ era, especially since Bae has a similar hairstyle to the one she had during that time. It’s so much like her rooftop ‘O.O’ scene!
