Now obviously LGBTQ+ centered movies aren’t a new concept, we’ve seen it done before, from Love, Simon, to Brokeback Mountain and everywhere in between. But here’s the difference between Bros and both of those films that we mentioned, the leads in those two films are played by straight, cis-gender men. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, as it’s acting, a movie is always going to be a more authentic story if the people involved in telling that story have lived the experience.
Bros
Bros marks the first rom-com from a major studio where two gay men are the focal point, and that’s a really big deal! Aside from that accolade, Billy Eichner also is making history as the first openly gay man to co-write and star in his own major motion picture, like we said, these stats are a big deal! And we are so proud of Billy and what he is creating.
With minds like Billy’s taking charge, we do not doubt that we’re about to see a shift in Hollywood and a shift in the imbalance of the amount of LGBTQ+ parts that are actually played by members of the community.
As Billy Eichner brilliantly said in an interview recently, it wouldn’t matter so much if members of the LGBTQ+ community were getting roles meant for straight, cis-gendered people at the rate in which the opposite seems to be true, but that’s not happening. The playing fields need serious leveling, and Bros is just the start!
We are huge suckers for a good romantic comedy, and from everything we’ve seen so far hyping us up for Bros, this is going to be one of our favorites in recent years. The cast is beyond killer, there is humor that feels very much up our alley, and what seems to be so much heart. September 30th can’t come soon enough and you know we are going to be the first in line at the theaters!
Plus, Bros brought us Billy on the Street back, and that in itself means it’s already beloved in our book.
