Imagine Dragons Bring Awareness To Mental Health With ‘I Don’t Like Myself’ Music Video

On World Mental Health Day, Imagine Dragons released the music video for the track ‘I Don’t Like Myself’ from their fifth studio album, Mercury Acts 1 & 2. To encourage fans to take care of their mental health and know they are not alone when they reach a low point, Imagine Dragons are partnering with Crisis Text Line, a 24/7 text- based crisis counseling hotline, to help support the organization with all they do.

What is World Mental Health Day?

October 10 is an international day for global mental health education, recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). The overall objective of this day is to raise awareness of mental health issues and advocate against social stigma.

Having bands and artists be open with their experiences in mental health lets us fans know that anyone and everyone goes through rough patches. “It’s okay- to not be okay,” but remember to seek help when needed and be kind to yourself.

The Meaning Of ‘I Don’t Like Myself’

The Imagine Dragons music video, ‘I Don’t Like Myself,’ takes us on an emotional wandering journey with lead singer, Dan Reynolds. Throughout the video, we see Dan walking through the city of Prague, expressing a range of emotions and some flashes of him and the band on stage performing. We figured that the message of the music video is to bring awareness to the difficulties mental health brings, all the internal battles that others may not be able to see, and how music can sometimes help you get through difficult times.

I wrote this song at a very low point for me. I struggled quite a bit with self-love over the years. I was in a deep rut of depression and turned to music for refuge. I’ve since spent many years in therapy working on self-love. I believe therapy is the reason I am still alive today. If it’s ever a question of whether or not you should go to therapy. The answer is always yes. Stay alive.

Dan Reynolds

The lyrics, “there are times when I don’t like myself. I believe all the things they say about me” illustrate that mental health causes a lot of internal battles to win. However, the lyrics – “They’re not better than you. They’re just a figment of imagination” – provide optimism and reassurance that you can win these battles.

Imagine Dragons x Crisis Text Line Fundraiser

Imagine Dragons partnered with Crisis Text Line, a 24/7 text-based mental health support, to aid the organization and its work through fundraisers. This organization provides free and high-quality support and crisis intervention throughout the United States and Puerto Rico – in both English and Spanish.

We’re grateful to join forces with Imagine Dragons to bring awareness to the growing mental health crisis. Our research shows that music is the most frequently mentioned coping mechanism for young people in emotional distress. ‘I Don’t Like Myself’ will bring comfort to many, as it embodies the hope and empathy that we all need at different times in our lives. Our volunteer Crisis Counselors are here 24/7 to provide free and confidential support to anyone in need—a crisis to you is a crisis to us.
