It’s wild to think it’s already been two and a half years since Kep1er first debuted. It feels like ‘WA DA DA‘ was released yesterday, but here we are. After two years of being a group, Kep1er are having their most special comeback yet with ‘Shooting Star’ and their first full-length album, Kep1going on – their most special, and one of their best. While we all thought Kep1going on would be the end of the road for Kep1er, we’re pleased to announce we were wrong because Kep1er are here to stay! And after listening to Kep1going on, we’re even more excited about it…
‘Shooting Star’
Kep1er is giving us pop excellence with ‘Shooting Star.’ This time around, Kep1er went for a more emotional and nostalgic sound. But ‘Shooting Star’ is also empowering and full of hope as it represents the achievement of their dreams together. This beautiful pop song has melodies that are satisfying, addictive, and full of emotion. The feelings the chorus, especially the first one, gives us are beyond words. As they strip it back for the first and last chorus before exploding into a beautiful melody, the song gives us literal chills. That’s how good it is.
Kep1going on
Keep1going on is not a comeback like any other for many reasons, one of which is that this marks Kep1er‘s first full-length album. And they didn’t disappoint because these b-sides are some of the best songs in their discography.
Kep1going on starts with ‘Last Carnival,’ an intro song that has no business being as good as it is. It’s full of nostalgia and emotion, killer melodies, and incredible vocals. And it’s the perfect complement to ‘Shooting Star.’ The only bad thing about this song is how short it is… but ‘Curious’ is also a great b-side to complement the title track. Its verses have a similar energy and vibe to ‘Shooting Star,’ but its chorus takes it to a much brighter, fun, almost quirky side.
If you were to pinpoint only one b-side to remember, ‘Flowers, Flutter, Your Heart’ would be the one. This song is taken straight out of a fairytale. It’s chill and more laid-back, but the strings and the harmonies are enough to make this one of the most impactful songs in their discography. This song is simply magical.
‘Double Up!’ brings the energy back up with its bright vibe. Influenced by club and house music, ‘Double Up!’ is an addictive banger. The next b-side, ‘PUSH BUTTON,’ keeps up that energy, but in a very different way. It’s fun, joyful, and extremely dynamic. You wouldn’t expect all the twists and turns this song takes you, and it’s incredible.
Kep1er bring back signature 2000s production with ‘Problem.’ It is an incredible b-side that gives us a great Y2K vibe yet feels fresh and unique. ‘Dear Diary’ is the last song in Kep1going on that is entirely new to us. It’s a more laid-back pop song with a fantastic concept for its lyrics. The girls sing their hearts out in the form of writing in their diaries, and it is gorgeous.
Kep1going on ends with the Korean version of their last two Japanese title tracks. Similarly to ‘PUSH BUTTON,’ you would never guess where ‘Grand Prix‘ will take you. It’s fun, dynamic, and has a genuinely unique chorus. Meanwhile, ‘Straight Line’ combines many different musical genres that blend meaninglessly and incredibly, creating a masterpiece. This is one of their best title tracks with how addictive it is – and that guitar in the verse is killer.
What was supposed to be Kep1er‘s last comeback turned out to be the bittersweet mark of a new beginning. Kep1er will always be remembered as nine. But we can’t wait to see what the future holds for Kep1er as well as Mashiro and Yeseo. One thing is for sure: we will never forget how special ‘Shooting Star’ is.
