It’s no secret that Olivia Rodrigo is a lyrical mastermind, and that’s part of what’s made her debut album, SOUR, as impactful as it’s been. From topping the charts to winning GRAMMYs and becoming the first debut album to spend its full first year in the top ten of the Billboard 200 this century, Olivia has painted the world purple and made fans worldwide fall in love with her artistic vision. It’s pretty mind-blowing that her music has only really been in our lives since January 2021!
But what might be even more mind-blowing is the fact that SOUR is just her first album, and it’s already so polished and filled with so many punchy lyrics! With just a single album, Olivia has proven herself as one of the most powerful songwriters of this generation and has become a household name all over the world.
Let’s look back at some of the most impressive moments of SOUR that really highlight Olivia’s talent! Pretty much everything about this album amazed us, but we tried to keep this list short so we don’t hold you hostage here all day.
“God, I wish that you had thought this through before I went and fell in love with you…”
This line from the bridge of ‘traitor’ just feels like a punch to the gut. You can hear the desperation in Olivia’s voice as she sings it, and it summarizes the main emotions of the song so succinctly. It really shows off her ability to pack the depth of her feelings into her lyrics!
“All my friends are tired of hearing how much I miss you, but I kinda feel sorry for them ’cause they’ll never know you the way that I do…”
When you lose someone you used to really care about in your life, it feels like every little thing they ever told you haunts you in your day-to-day life. In a way, it’s a blessing for them to have trusted you so much, but on the other hand, it makes moving forward a lot harder. With this lyric from ‘drivers license,’ you can really feel where Olivia is at in the breakup and how it’s affected her!
“I bet you even tell her how you love her in between the chorus and the verse (I love you)…”
Can we start a fan club for this cheeky part of ‘deja vu?’ Because we wanna start a fan club for this cheeky part of ‘deja vu.’ While calling out her ex for recycling his romantic tricks on someone new, Olivia throws in a little reference to those exact tricks by murmuring “I love you” in between the chorus and the verse of her own song. It reinforces the idea behind the line while also filling in the space before the chorus comes to a head.
“Maybe I’m too emotional or maybe you never cared at all…”
This line is the ultimate one-two punch of the ‘good 4 u’ bridge! The contrast between Olivia blaming herself and realizing the breakup might not have been her fault after all is so powerful and really drives home the frustration in the song.
“My jealousy, jealousy started followin’ me…”
The punk-inspired banger ‘jealousy, jealousy’ is all about how social media has warped our self-esteem and made us compare ourselves to others, and we love that this line carries a double meaning of “followin’.” Not only is Olivia’s jealousy of others haunting her, but “followin’” plays on the fact that we follow people on socials to get updates on them. Pretty clever, if you ask us!
“Doe-eyed as you buried me, one heart broke, four hands bloody…”
This line from ‘favorite crime’ breaks our hearts every time! It sees Olivia admitting her naivety in the relationship and thinking she played a part in its ultimate downfall. It paints such a vivid picture of how hurt she was, and the gruesome imagery of bloody hands really emphasizes it.
