Red Velvet is known for having one of the most perfect discographies in the industry, so every time a comeback comes around, everyone is at the edge of their seat waiting to see what masterpieces they can release next. And here we are with another flawless, perfect release from Red Velvet!
Red Velvet is back with ‘Birthday’ and another mini-album continuing their ReVe Festival series. Going back to the cuter, brighter, and quirkier side of their music, this might be one of Red Velvet’s best releases… Then again, we always say that about Red Velvet, because that’s how good they are.
Fun Red Velvet is back, everyone! ‘Birthday’ is quite literally all about having fun and enjoying life. And even though we love the velvet side of Red Velvet’s music, this release feels so refreshing. With a super fun drop, this song is the definition of catchy. Plus, the post-chorus melody feels so satisfying and it makes the song even better. Even though this song might be lighthearted and catchy, it doesn’t stop them from showcasing their insane vocal abilities – it’s Red Velvet we’re talking about, after all. And even if it’s bright and fun, Red Velvet also continues to get inspiration from classical music, as the song samples George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody In Blue.’ The best part of the song has to be the last chorus, where the song quite literally explodes. It’s not only a birthday celebration – Red Velvet give the party of the year!
The music video feels equally as fun as the song itself, if not more. The storyline it shows is so fun to follow and the styling and settings are top-notch. It’s colorful, bright, and quirky – something Red Velvet do so well. Red Velvet always know how to own a concept and ‘Birthday’ is further proof of it!
The ReVe Festival 2022 – Birthday
Red Velvet’s releases are always a whole experience that incorporates both the title track and its b-sides. This time around, Red Velvet gives us four b-sides that navigate through several influences and make it their own in the most unique way. The ReVe Festival 2022 – Birthday is quite literally a release only Red Velvet could do!
The first b-side in this mini-album, ‘BYE BYE’ immediately feels much darker than ‘Birthday.’ As they take inspiration from Beethoven’s famous melody in ‘Für Elise,’ they mix once again classical music with RnB – and it is just excellent. The use of this melody is pure genius. It’s subtle and creates such an amazing atmosphere. And the pre-chorus in the second verse is just a masterpiece. These girls are singers, they sing. ‘BYE BYE’ is just gold! Meanwhile, ‘On A Ride’ exemplifies Red Velvet’s more fun side, serving as the perfect complementary song to ‘Birthday.’ With a fun and captivating drop, ‘On A Ride’ is incredibly catchy. It feels badass yet fun at the same time.
The fourth song in this EP is intriguing right from the start. It is subtle yet captivating. ‘ZOOM’ could easily be a 2nd gen group song, and Red Velvet pull it off so well. It’s sassy, full of attitude, and a song not many could execute as well as these girls do. Truly excellence! The chorus that they all sing all together just makes it so good. Eventually, they finish their mini-album with the most slow-paced song: ‘Celebrate,’ which is absolute R&B excellence. While ‘Birthday’ is a fun, bright, and uplifting song, ‘Celebrate’ serves as a perfect mirror of that song. They might have the same concept of celebrating a birthday, but ‘Celebrate’ is much more lowkey and vibey, showing how versatile Red Velvet are as a group and as singers.
And so Red Velvet remain the queens of concept, of music, and of everything at this point. After years of being in the industry, these girls keep proving that they can come up with something unique, original, refreshing, and new every single time. Queens indeed!
