If you aren’t already familiar with TXT’s Huening Kai, our first question for you is: why on earth not? He’s an incredibly talented idol, with all the singing, dancing, and aegyo skills you could ask for.
But even more than that, did you know he’s legitimately a musical prodigy? Like he can play any instrument you want and has perfect pitch – that’s the level we’re talking about here. We’ll never forget the day he went so viral on Twitter that it even reached the locals, because he was on VLive (RIP) playing Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ on the piano with one hand, whilst talking about collecting Pikachu stickers. Get you an idol that can do it all, we guess?
Nonchalantly playing some of the most iconic symphonies of all time isn’t where his talent ends though. Huening Kai has had a hand in TXT’s songwriting since he was just 17 years old. All five members of TXT are formidable writers, composers and producers, but today we’re focusing on just our maknae. Here are eight of the many TXT songs that Huening Kai has credits on, proving his skills shine, just like the diamond maknae he is.
The first TXT track with a Huening Kai writing/composing credit on it is ‘Roller Coaster,’ taken from their first full album The Dream Chapter: MAGIC. In fact, it was the very first TXT song to have any member’s name in the credits. Not bad for the maknae, huh? The UK garage and house inspired track is a bop, and we love that, nearly two years after release, ‘Roller Coaster’ got it’s chance to shine at TXT’s 2021 fanlive Shine Together.
You basically can’t talk about TXT in 2023 without talking about ‘Happy Fools.’ We haven’t been able to escape the song on our TikTok FYP, and we don’t see that changing any time soon, nor would we want it to.
‘Sweat’ is secret track that all five members of TXT wrote for MOA. It’s not available on any streaming platforms, but the lucky fans that went to ACT: LOVE SICK, TXT performed it live.
We can’t really talk about Kai’s songwriting skills without talking about ‘Dear Sputnik,’ right? The rock track is a fan-favorite and was written, composed and produced by Hyuka. No wonder it made the setlist for both ACT: SWEET MIRAGE and TXT’s 2023 headline at Lollapalooza.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the fact that the two maknaes wrote a song like ‘Opening Sequence’ is testament to TXT’s musical maturity. The alt R&B track is truly one-of-a-kind, as is its choreography.
Like ‘Opening Sequence,’ ‘Lonely Boy’ is taken from minisode 2: Thursday’s Child. However, sonically, they’re worlds apart. ‘Lonely Boy,’ a Yeonjuniez unit track (Yeonjun and Kai), is features acoustic guitar over a trap beat. Huening Kai’s songwriting skills aren’t contained to just pop-r&b and rock!
‘Maze In The Mirror’
‘Maze In The Mirror’ is another OT5 cowrite, produced by Beomgyu. A brit-pop track about their trainee days, this one was written before TXT even debuted. Considering that Huening Kai was a maximum of 16 years old at the time they wrote this, that makes the songwriting prowess of TXT all the more impressive.
Last but not least, we have an unofficial co-write for you. ‘Blue Spring’ is the surprise song from this year’s ACT: SWEET MIRAGE. It’s peak Gen Z in that it’s pop-punk inspired, but sits firmly as a pop ballad. The lyrics, written for MOA by all of TXT, will definitely make you shed a tear or too. So now, we wait for its official release… hint hint, BigHit.
